In his PR work for Ford in the seventies JYS used to do performance driving instruction and films. One of the things they did was make people driver a saloon car with a dish about 3' in diamerer mounted horizontally on the bonnet/hood. The dish had a depth of 2-3" and it had a tennis ball in it. The trick was to drive round a circuit or slalom course, keeping the ball in the dish. The point being, smooth is quick.
