Don't! If there is water in it you need room for a header - for expansion - and that means all the hoses etc to give proper circulation, and you will be able to run it only for a few moments, and if there is not a header - how much money did you say you want to throw away on an unnecessary rebuild? On the other hand, why not take it apart and have a peek whilst you are there and save all the trouble and aggravation! Just a look inside the rocker cover will give you a very good clue as to the state of the rest of the engine AND how well it has been looked after. But whilst you have the rocker cover off, check the rocker shaft and all the bearings. But then you have loosened all the head bolts so why not have a look at the bores and cylinder head, guides, valves etc. But to look at the bores properly it's best to take the sump of ....... Just don't forget to put everything in racks etc, so that you can replace it in the same place if required. But hold on a minute - I think we are just about on a complete rebuild here. :-) For an engine with an unknown history that might not be a bad idea ........ :-) :-))
