Actually this sounds normal if its just a slight crunch as you select 1st or reverese..
As the 4 speed box attached to the A-Series has not syncro on first or reverse.. and never did have. the 1500 boxes IIRC have syncro on all 4 forward gears, can't remember about reverse.
