Bob, Can't add much to your post. The same here. Until you are completely out of the SF bay area, going south more than 55 miles, the idea of just staying in the right lane is near impossible and even then, as you say, people passing someone in the left lanes who are not going the normal 5-10 miles above posted speed come up behind you at 70 plus mile per hour speeds. Then when you do clear city traffic and constant merge lanes and say travel I-5 south to southern California the traffic flow is 80 miles per hour. I love speed as much as the next guy but when you can't keep up with the traffic flow it is downright dangerous and annoying to drive here without adequate horse power and torque.
I don't like everything about our Mazda Tribute but that thing had lots of power and torque to enter freeways and great acceleration even in the 65 to 90 mph range. Medium size, light weight, SUV with a 210 hp V6 with super torque and a little firmer suspension that is tuned for fast cornering. Ride is a bit firm in town but a far safer vehicle when evolved in quick maneuvers that most vans would roll over in.
