You need two screwdrivers. Put one against the front of the 1st gear central hub, and lever the hub backwards, away from the 2nd gear. With the other screwdriver, lever the 1st gear selector fork forwards. Pop - into neutral.
You can actually do this with the box in the car. But too late now!
