Robbie,
Widening the tunnel is nothing - it takes just a few minutes and makes no
difference to the structural integrity of it.
The replacement cross member can be bolted in place - which is exactly the
same principle as used in the MGBs.
It is even possible to reverse the changes if you needed to.
