The version that I grew up with was the same for England with the
sword on the left so it can be drawn with the right hand, thereby
driving on the right to allow the greatest distance between your
weapon and your possible enemy. The same reasoning followed in the
United States, except without a sword on the left, carrying a pistol
on the right side to be drawn and used with the right hand, requires
you to pass on the right.
