If you hold the sword with your right hand you want your enemy to be
on that side so you travel to the left of the oncoming attacker.
You shake with the right hand to demonstrate you are not approaching
with a weapon in your hand.
Another 'fascinating' (!) comment is that a spiral staircase in a
castle will normally curl to the right as you are going up. This
restricts the right (sword) arm movement of an attacker coming from
the bottom and allows the defender from the top greater movement.
There are left handed spiral staircases but these are rare enough to
be commented on with a usual reminder that 'Harold the Horrible' - or
whoever had the castle built - was a left hander.
Can any-one explain why screw threads are clockwise to tighten (apart
from some left handed threads for specific rotational purposes)? And
why do clocks go clockwise? Is it because it is the way the shadow
travels on a sun-dial?
Silly old world isn't it?
