I remember all the cars in the 1970s that used lever arms. Always were
crap, always leaked. You would replace them every year to get the car
through the MOT. I think the problem with them is that they are doing two
jobs, hold the geometry of the front suspension and provide the damping. I
think that the up and down forces rotate the shaft and thats OK but the
forward and backward forces from accelerating and braking for instance force
the shaft against the seals and it leaks. The beauty of using telescopics
is that the new bracket holds the geometry and the telescopic only does the
damping and there are no forces acting to the detriment of the seals.
