If you're getting 'good' adhesion with the aerosol primer, it probably won't
make any difference, but the problem is you won't know how good the
adhesion was until quite a few coats later and then it will just begin lifting
and flaking off! I've had that happen a couple of times, when I haven't used
etch primer.
So, to be safe, I'd use etch primer instead of the normal primer - you can get
etch primer in aerosol cans - I used U-pol Acid #8, (www.u-pol.com) I'm sure
you can get it in the US. Just make sure you use a good quality soluble
particles face mask/filter and protective glasses when you use it - its nasty
stuff.
The other thing you will probably need, which I omitted to mention earlier is
some seam sealer. Great stuff! Celullose compatible, I used it on pretty much
all of the overlaping seams on the car - usually after most of the primer
coats. Can be overpainted no problem. I got a 1 litre tin, which should be
enough for the whole car, and I put it on with my finger, rather than brushing
it on, I found it went on better like that, even if it was messier. It ensures a
completely waterproof seal.
