Put like that, I agree with you as well. However, it's not as simplistic as you
make it out to be is it?
Bearing in mind, I've been paying National Insurance contributions ever since
I was legally able to work, and that was at 16 on saturday jobs in department
stores, which now by my calculation is about 25 years worth of NI
contributions.
I had a need recently to claim a benefit I felt I was entitled to, I had a Doctor's
certificate stating I was unable to work, yet wasn't able to claim the benefit.
Why? even though I'd paid 25 years worth of NI contributions, the only
qualifying period for this particular benefit was the last years NI
contributions which as I'd been off work, I hadn't made any. Thats fair is it?
Likewise, I had to see a specialist, if I wanted that on the NHS I'd have to have
waited 18 months, whereas I needed to see one now - upshot? Yep you
guessed it - I had to pay for it myself. Thats fair is it?
As I said previously the only people who benefit from our Health System, are
the ones who don't pay for it. And yes you're right, if I sound bitter its because
I am bitter - I've paid into this system all my life, and the one time I needed
help I couldnt get any or had to pay for it myself - so what the hell am I paying
for?
