I believe the "real" British Racing Green is the shade that was adopted by the "Bentley Boys" team when they raced at Le Mans. That's where it got its name.
As others have commented, there have followed all sorts of shades interpreting this colour.
Apparently, the human eye can detect more distinct shades of green than of any other colour in the spectrum. Something to do with our ancestors living in verdant forests.
Not a lot of people know that (said in a Michael Cain accent for authenticity)
