Thank you to all who responded to my request for advice.
I think that a briken core plug sounds quite likely as I have
noticed that some have already been replaced.
Luckily there is an MG specialist a few miles from where I live and
I am taking it there this weekend so they can inspect what needs
doing. thank goodness I have bought a car that has plenty of
specialist help around: just try finding parts for a 1972 Audi 100,
which was my previous transport(now sold!).
