Ben...
I'd go with Guy's advice on greasing the
U-joints first...most especially the front
one which can be hard to service.
But, when exactly in the process does
the "clang" occur, Ben? When the clutch
is to the floor and while in the process
of shifting, or at the point in it's travel
wherein the clutch is
"transferring loads" to/from the rest of the powertrain?
