Yup, I'm here! Problem with me is, I've never done a 1500 trans! So I'm not about to give advice, as I've discovered I can get into enough trouble with the things I work with all the time! Later, Pa "Paul Asgeirsson" 38000... MORE

Correctomundo, Joe.....2000rpm for 20 mins. or so per Beckers. Jim got the motor built/intalled at APT (not Rivergate as I thought...it's got a Rivergate Datsun 5 spd. though) so no doubt initial (cam) run in has already been accomplished by Mr. Anto n & Co. :) (That was some story about radio installation, BTW....bad day, obviously!) G'day Jim Joe's correct when he says :"A good many new cars come with Mobil 1 as the original factory fill" However, these cars were/are designed for light weight synthetic oils. For example, often you will find overhead camshafts running directly in aluminium cylinder heads, with no intervening bearing material. Your car was designed with larger tolerances, and required a heavier grade oil. Rebuilding it doesn't change that. We use a standard mineral based oil (Penrite HPR30 which is 20W60 weight) in both road and race engines, and never have a problem with it. About 12 months ago we... MORE

Mike, My 75 had the manual choke but I would recommend using a stock set up first and then make improvements. Manual conversion kits are readily available from Vicky B anyway. You SHALL NOT remove the gearbox unless thou has first shifted the motor to a special place........... outside the car. If you're sticking with the Stromberg definitely buy the tool. Hi, Jed! I live in a nice neighborhood, and my `79 Midget is garaged. However, I sometimes park in less than desirable areas and I have had issues with young jerks throwing beer cans, McDonald's waste, etc. into the cockpit of my car if not covered with a tonneau - in broad daylight in mall parking lots, etc.!! Also had a radio stolen once (before the car was garaged). The idiots tore open the top with a knife to crawl into the cockpit and ripped out the entire console. Radio was a Blaupunt with a "code," so it was... MORE

G'day guys Here's a little story that deserves to be told. Way back last August, I bought a used Datsun 5-speed box in the US, and had it shipped to Paul Asgeirsson at Morriservice to be rebuilt. A mate of mine was coming home from the US, and between the two of us we arranged Paul to supply two 5-speed conversion kits, my gearbox and another one for my mate. Well eventually they arrived, and in March my 5-speed Datto box and a kit went to another mate (Steve) 600 miles away, down in Melbourne. Steve fitted it to... MORE

HI Colin, Just got back from a great weekend with my GF, which included taking in the Forest Grove Concourse d'Elegance. Gotta give extra strokes to a gal, non car person, who will traipse along with me looking at incredibly restored and original cars in 90 degree weather. Mostly shaded, fortunately. Going through my email and came across this nice compliment from you and Steve. I've never had a 5 speed fail like that before so was most interested in finding out what happened. After Steve tore it down and sent e photos to me, there simply was no... MORE

any gear oil in it. any advise on this is welcome. I have restored many many cars in my time including lots of engine rebuilds, but have never had to tear into a tranny. sounds like these are pretty easy though. or if someone happens to have a good used laying around let me know. that way I can get on the road for this summer. otherwise it will probably be a winter project for me. I'm in CO by the way thanks in advance mike "mblotz" 37824... MORE

You building a "Town/Country" or "Highway" driver, Bruce? ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL..... "60"overbore will pull up low end torque (increases compression ratio) whilst increasing "revability" (more "square" bore/stroke numbers) As can be seen, the foregoing improvement lends itself automatically to a "hairier" cam quite nicely (without compromising the low end). The question is "how hairy" for your specific application? Thus, the initi al question at the top of the page, Bruce. Vizard's book contains an excellent description of many "grinds". For town/country, the numbers associated with an MD266 give a nice general improvement all-around with slight emphasis on mid-rang... MORE

Jim, I would be thrilled if I owned a BE that would be good enough to qualify as a "Trailer Queen". Or could it be a "Trailer King"? Bob Brad, Me-thinks you are a little harsh on the owner of a "Trailer Queen". It actually could be some one like me ( it isn't, but it could be), who scrimps every dime to make his car as perfect as humanly possible, over many years, skinned knuckles, pissed off wife, depleted check book and someone who values perfection. He trailers his car, and never drives it for fear of a... MORE

Hi all, just bought a complete but knackered 1275 74 model and am starting to look at what I am going to do with it mechanically (apart from the necessary reshell) I bought book on A series tuning as I have only rebuilt MGB engines before and have decided that althogh I want to keep the car as original as possible the air filters and exhaust manifold were non standard so these will be replaced with K&N's plus a complete stainless exhaust and manifold. These parts seem to be the only non original parts on the whole car. Is... MORE

G'day Joe The standard trick Down Under is to turn up the radio. Or fit one. Or take a nagging wife with you. If you don't have a nagging wife, borrow one from a friend - he will be grateful. My 1380cc race engine is a little worn. It was worn with rust marks in the bores when I first used it 12 years ago, and it hasn't improved by use. I'm not prepared to bore it to 74mm just yet, and so pistons are a little sloppy. Even new pistons aren't much tighter than the old used ones,... MORE

Always glad to have your advise , Ed. Once I've heard from you, I know exactly which course of action to follow. No, I can't count my time as value in the car. If I did, I'd own a $100k car, and then I'd be afraid to drive it. The new clutch works just fine, and those "brittle" grade 8 bolts haven't snapped like soda crackers either. Just thought you'd like to know. "joe blxfstz" 37677... MORE

The Haynes manual is ok for the gearbox, but not really adequate for a complete rebuild of the diff. You need all the crown wheel and pinion setting information, most of which is in the factory manual; however, even this source has a couple of critical bits of info missing, which are the sizes of gauge blocks for setting the crownwheel and pinion positions. However, you can easily go some way to taking up some of the slack and at little cost, too. The thrust washers for the spider gears can be replaced without too much difficulty. Let me... MORE

There's more than one way to skin this cat, including doing it yourself with the help of some shop manuals. The Haynes manual is probably adequate. Your local machine shop might be entirely competent to repair/rebuiild your tranny and diff. Then again they may not be. You could try just asking them whether they are competent. If they really are a good shop, they will tell you the truth. Amother, probably better, alternative would be to send both the tranny and diff to someone who has done many of these. I think it's likely that would produce the best... MORE

I bed to differ, the flywheen on the 948 is IIRC much deeper, and it hits the back of the bell housing with the ribcase gearbox or it did when I tried to do it (I eneded up taking the flywheel and back plate off the blown 1098) The 948 that was in my frogeye (which also has a ribcase geabox) that I repeleced with a 1275 also had a 1098 flywheel As for the later gearboxes allgedely superior blauk ring syncro, wears out just as quickly. There are only two reasons to fit the ribcase, you are fitting... MORE

What's wrong with the current gearbox? if its weak syncro you won't gain much with the later gearbox, Syncro dies just as easilly. If the car has its original box and engine and both are working, leave it alone, alterations will detract form it's value. TO fit the later gearbox you will need the flywheel and the back plate from a later engine and possibly a new spigot bush. Certanly the entire clutch (to go with the flywheel). Can't remeber why the flywheel was needed, but I did do this job on my A40 farina after blowing the 1098... MORE

Flywheels are matched to the engine, NOT to the transmissions!! Putting a ribcase on a 948 requires a thick back plate as the input shaft protrudes forward of the case more. Some will bottom out in the crankcase and there will be no neutral and soon no input shaft bearing!! Later gearboxes have superior baulk rings for synchronizing gears, the early ones have brass cones as synchronizers. They don't work very well unless you drive like great great aunt Matilda!! Then nothing is important but to get out of her way, and damn the synchros!! Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson"... MORE

G'day guys Cooler air is denser, denser air picks up more fuel and carries it intot he combustion chamber, and you get a bigger bang. So a little more power. Something you would notice at speed not on a dyno. Correctly positioned, the intake will also provide a ram air effect - a mini blower. Note: more of each, fuel and air, so it's still at the correct fuel/air ratio, not "more fuel" as in running richer. I do like your idea Robert, a little lateral thinking going on there. If you set it up correctly you might actually... MORE

G'day Mark Jon is correct - that's pretty much the way they are. However, it isn't pretty much the way they WERE. First gear will be a LITTLE bit noisier when the gearbox is in good condition, but certainly not a LOT noisier. Added to the symptom of jumping out of gear (which it should NEVER do) you should budget for a greabox rebuild really soon. If you don't, the bits of metal coming off 1st gear will get tangled in the bearings and other gears, and your repair bill will be higher when you eventually get to it.... MORE

Mark, Yup, that is pretty much the way they are. Think of first as only to get you rolling then go to second. First is always noisier but the popping out is a sign it's got wear. Also never sit with your foot on the clutch at a light or such as it doesn't have a real throwout bearing and it will wear out fast. Just use the clutch to put it in gear and get moving.
