G'day Don Slipping clutch could be a sign of worn clutch disk, or insufficent clamping pressure, or both. In my humble opinion, the only people who don't change everything (see below) are those who get their jollies from removing and replacing engines. Don First make sure that your release bearing is not being held on, leaving the clutch partially disengaged. This could be a sticky throw out arm or a problem in the slave / master cyl inder. Usually the problem is found at the clutch end. If its not this then the driven plate friction material could have worn too thin OR it has over heated due to slipping - this will result in a shiny glazed finish of the friction material. Don, Hope it's not rude to interrupt. I have exactly the same situation in my Midge and have decided on a new clutch/throwout assembly. The clutch works fine under moderate acceleration but whenever I put my foot into it is slips badly in any gear. It also seems to get worse the longer I have the car out. Without taking the car apart I have narrowed it to two possiblities. Oil leakage or old springs. I used the original clutch from my $500 dollar buy when I installed the engine. Don... Usually, to the average owner, having to pull a perfectly good motor to replace a malfunctioning clutch is a PITA. Unless you are a "Clarici", it is s time consuming and/or labor/money consuming. Unless your clutch parts are basically new, I suggest you replace ALL while you are "in there" as considering the foregoing, clutch parts are cheap. Nothing like replacing a disc today, and having to go through the whole process again to replace a pressure plate or worn T/O bearing 6 mos down the road. And ask him what the flipping reserve is, 9 times out of 10 ebay sellers will tell you the reserve, it's in their interest isn't it? Then decide if its what you really want, if it is, stick your bid down equalling or beating the reserve about 10 mins before the auction ends. Is it really necessary to replace the clutch pressure plate when installing a new clutch disk? Does the pressure plate have any tendency to go bad over time? Is there a test to determine if it needs to be replaced? Don 73 & 74 Midget rwa "Don May" 27482... MORE
While contemplating various 5 speed conversions, engine mods etc etc I had fall into my lap today a complete 87 Toyota Corolla GTS, that's the 1600cc twin cam and 5 speed RWD car . I did find one web site http://www.team.net/www/mg/tech/midget/engswapa.html that describes the transplant of a 4T motor, which is very similar but not of a 4A swap .. Anyone with any first hand experience and or URLs of this swap . ? Oh and for the purists out there, if a 5 speed Japanese transmission is an acceptable improvement how can the whole doggoned drive line not... MORE
Before I install the wrong spark plugs and poke a hole in the top of a piston or two, I thought I better get some professional help from the group. I've installed the Ignitor and a 40K coil, now I don't know what range plug to install. I'm equally unsure about the plug wires. The other up-grades to this engine are a Kent 266 cam, bored 20 over and fully balanced with an aluminum flywheel. What combination of spark plugs and wires would be best suited to this engine. I think Wes meant the wires from the reverse light *switch*, Mr Pedantic! They do come forwards out of the gearbox tunnel then into the main loom. David "David Jacobs" 27312... MORE

I'm not sure of the compression ratio but the head has been milled 0.080 and the cylinders are 0.040 larger. I'm using the valves for the 1098 head and running 1 1/2 SU's. The combustion chambers have all been opened up and balanced but I don't remember their size and won't be able to measure them until I get the new valve guides and lead free valve seats installed. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!! Every day I drive to and from work I must pass the body shop where I see mine still sitting on a cart waiting its turn to be painted. Maybe by Christmas I'll get it back. I'm trying to get all the small stuff done before I get it back, ie reassemble the engine, transmission, paint all the small parts etc. If I don't then I am like you too much car and too little garage! Nelson... Well, "knock" is pretty well tied to compression ratios and timing along with octanes of course, but you already know this. You are looking at a cam with numbers similiar to a Kent #276. The lift numbers may be the other way around but this is a minor point (usually a bit more lift for exhaust rather than inlet, when cam is assymetric, 'cause exhaust valve is smaller I guess?). This is a very fast road cam, similiar to what an APT VP3 or Kent #286 would be for a 1275, more or less. Minimum compression ratio for... MORE
Well, I just couldn't stand no being in debt. I had come into a small (and I mean small) amount of cash recently due to the sell of a piece of property in a ghetto. I have a rip free covertable top on it, and good black paint on it. The engine and transmission work good, I need to adjust the engine to run at normal speed. The brakes work and all the lights work. "To say nothing of the tune-up costs" Yes, really! I think they hold 13 quarts of oil and have two oil filters as well. Not inexpensive to keep up, for sure. While we have you here, what sort of clutch/slave cylinder set-up are you using for the 5 speed conversion, Mr. A? The new blue /white bulbs appear a lot brighter than the H7 (halogen) ones they replaced. They are in my dailyrunner (new shape Rover 214 (like a Honda civic)) with stupid slitty headlamps. I noticed an immediate improvement using the Phillips premium bulbs. Generally, for best illumination, circular lights are best with of course a true parabolic reflector. The MG version of the 214 has two sets of circular headlamps surprisingly. 60W main beam I believe. If you do have glass lenses in the headlamps then a step up in wattage is also preferable , I can't ever remember... MORE

Considering the clutch problem is intermittent along with the fact you found (really) low fluid level in the master cylinder after the hard braking incident, I would suspect air has gotten into the line, rather than any mechanical problem. Ok...I get the Castrol 20w50 and put it in the engine. Crank her up and she hums just sweeeeet. So, I go out to drive her. When I push in the clutch she idles down way low like something's dragging on the engine and the little red ignition light comes on. I give her a little gas and we seem to be fine. No problems putting her into gear so I go for a drive around the block. I get to the end of the street and can't get her in first. I get her in second and we... MORE

Thanks Nigel, Yes, sentimentality does enter into it. My father gave me this Sprite as a high school graduation present some 23 years ago. He actually gave it to me in pieces, and we rebuilt it together, which brought us closer, considering I was living with my mother after their divorce. So it's not just a car, it's a family heirloom! In the last three years I have installed performance suspension front and rear, uprated brakes, Weber, and LCB exhaust header. I filled the clutch fluid to the full level and just went out to drive her. I haven't driven her in probably a month. Now, there's almost no play in the pedal coming up off the floor before the gear engages and once when I stopped and had the clutch in I felt the engine bog down and it ground going into first. I eventually was able to gently work it in. It's also making an odd noise that I don't think I can describe but know it's not normal for this car. The oil on the dipstick registers... MORE
