I'm trying to locate one of the brackets that attaches the clutch slave to the tranny for a 1500 Midget. This can come from a 1500 Midget or a 1500 Spitfire, since the gear is the same on both. Bracket has 2 bolts to mount to the tranny, and a pinch bolt to hold the clutch slave. If you have one you can part with, please let me know. Thanks! TJ "TJ Tryon, Jr." 30484... MORE
Bob A wow factor of 4.6 - is that out of a 1,000? And if you want your brake, clutch and fuel lines to look like the wiring of an electrical plug - go right ahead! N "amukdigiphoto" 30239... MORE
Thanks for the pics TJ I agree with Trevor - those lower hinge's look particularly bad, are you planning on sorting those out? Also you can get lower rear wing repair sections for those rotted lower rear wings. And your bonnet (hood) has the typical rot spots for that 'double-skinned' area at the front. Was the transmission tunnel reasonably solid, hence your not touching it? I stripped all that crap off my transmission tunnel and yes it took ages! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 30203... MORE
G'day TJ Remove the float bowl lids and, with a compressed air gun, blow the sludge out of the sump at the bottom of the bowls. Remove the carby dashpost and blow air into the bottom of the float bowl to ensure the fuel supply jet to the carby is clear. We had a car in the shop recently with a similar problem - idled fine but wouldn't go up a hill. Plenty of fuel in the float bowl, but the fuel supply jet was 90% blocked and nothing was getting to the carby. And if the car has... MORE
Well! I guess I could be sarcastic and snippy and say "thanks for the underwhelming response" or something like that but I'll try to bite my tongue and just be grateful for the response I DID get from an email to Barney Gaylord, the webmaster of "MGA With an Attitude." He responded quickly with a detailed message and a link to pictures of the gearbox in question. For those who might run into a similar problem: The reverse light switch caused the reverse selector detent to stick and that allowed reverse to be selected all of the time. The... MORE
No kidding, Josh. I would never have guessed. Glad I have a BE and 5 speed. Don't need no steeenking reverse lights! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30174... MORE
I have 2 main mechanical issues I will need to fix before doing any real driving. (I have many other non-mechanical issues, some even just mental). 1. Brake pedal needs "pumped" to build up pressure. Once I pump it a few times I can hold it down and it stays firmly (doesn't go all the way to the floor no matter how hard I push). Before I pump it, it goes all the way to the floor. When I let off the brakes, and drive for a bit, I need to go through the whole process again. I don't... MORE
Well, Jim... Weight IS one advantage. With a "glass" bonnet we go more 50/50 fore/aft. I don't know what the actual weight savings is, but it IS substantial in consideration of available HP. It's sorta like lightening the flywheel but it's more effective in the higher rather than lower gears, unlike the lightened flywheel. Also, while I'm in good shape for 61, part of the reason is because I'm "aware" enough not to try to be a 20 year any more than I try to be a 40 year old, again. People have back problems (usually) as they get... MORE

Alan, I would tend to agree. The list posts everyday are mind-boggling! It's been a typical Midwestern winter and my car is in winter storage for the first time since I've owned it so I haven't been able to go out and putter on it. I've spent my time annoying people with emails. I hope to get the little beast home in a few weeks and start pulling the engine for my clutch job and other things. That should bring back some measure of sanity. Rob C Webfoot Leisure.com rob@... 630-841-6077 robbiesg@... 29961... MORE
I am fitting new seels to my dual master cylinder and are wondering which way the end bit in the clutch cylinder goes. At the very far end of the return spring is a metal cup and inside this cup there should go a smaller rubber cup (shaped as a cup). The one i took out had turned around on its side thats why i am wondering which way to fit the new one. Is the bottom of the cup facing forward (ie towards the firewall) or backward, it looks like it will fit either way. Jens Jens P.... MORE

Hi, The diff on my 1500 needs replacing and I've the option of a 3.7 (recon) if i want it, i've heard this is a weaker diff, is this true? THe engine is stage 1 an the moment but im slowly aquiring bits to take it further. As I'm seriously thinking of a 5 speed conversion later this year (most likely autumn) maybe it isnt that important. I know the later 1500's came form the factory (so i'm told anyway with a 3.7) but is the difference noticable, both in reduced revs at cruising speed and the slight loss... MORE
Neil... Belay the last paragraph of my last post on this subject, and all ref to the Datsun box. You got a 1500!!! Sorry! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 29862... MORE
Neil... I too have been told the same about the 3.7 diff from Bill Perry of Rivergate (and he oughta know!). In my discussion with him on this (I've used a 3.7 for many moons) it became apparent that it's all in how the individual driver treats his machinery. Does he transfer gobs of power instantly, or not. IOW, does he/she beat on it? My current 3.7 diff came out of my '74 Vizardized Spridget..90+hp at the wheels. I put about 10K on the car annually for 12 years or so, then it saw service in my '67 Sprite... MORE
In my junkyard explorations today I came across an Austin car that I had never seen before. It was rear drive hardtop coupe, had a 948 in the cab with a single downdraft carb. Drum brakes all round, most of the markings and nameplates were missing. It looked like an Austin Amercia or Morris 1100, but was rear drive. (c. 1964?) It had a faded rear deck lid that appeared to be A40. I was interested in the rear ratio.... hmmmm? "riley_datsun" 29772... MORE
Hello all, my Dad's '72 Midget is stuck in reverse. I had been trying to get the reverse light switch to work and had some measured success, but now things have gone horribly awry. The little plunger that pops up to activate the light switch doesn't seem to be popping up anymore and the little jewel won't shift at all. When I let out the clutch it'll back up just fine. It seems as though the first-second gate is working, but when you stick the lever in either position, the transmission locks up solidly. The lever won't move over... MORE
And Great to drive over at night. Did it in my Mk3 Midget one April, on a London to Edinburgh overnight run. You can really get the speed up, as you can see when there are any other cars coming from the opposite direction (the lights from several miles away is a dead give-away!!) Daytime is a little trickier, though, especially if there is another car too close in front, and you need to make a run at a steep bit. Another steep bit is Applecross, on the Western coast of Scotland. That I thnk is a bit steeper... MORE
I think it was Alan who was querying this... either he didn't know that Bugattis were blue (unlikely) or he didn't know that thery were French. ************************************************** I knew most Bugattis were blue, although I'm looking at a (Belgian)1920's B lack one at the moment. The famous type 35 (from 1924) usually blue and sti ll raced in historic GP events. I thought they were Italian up until modern days, but no. The early cars were made in Italy 1899 to 1911 'ish Then the family moved to France and production was increased-particularly a fter the 1st world war.... MORE

Bob- I agree with all you say. But..... It IS leaking now, even if only a little. The engine is out. Why not fix it so it won't leak at all? At least that is my thought. Am I assuming the aftermarket seals are better than they actually are? I have a friend who is selling me the MiniMania kit for a very good price.
