I'm looking at buying a 1976 MG Midget special 57K with the 1500cc engine it has the Webber carb upgrade new starter and alternator but the connecting rod bolt came out and trashed the lower end of the engine they said it need a crank connecting rod and the block needed to be machined. How much would it cost to rebuild vs. replace with new/used engines???? also what are the specs for this engine stock and with the Webber carb kit??? besides that the car is decent shape minor rust (not bad surface only on seams)and there are a... Sunday I replaced the u-joints in my 79 1500. I got all the C-clips in their grooves, I thought, and re-installed the drive shaft. This AM, on the way to work, one grease cup let go, letting another one break out, and the car ended up being towed to my mechanic, where he's currently replacing the damaged u-joint. Is there some trick I'm missing, or am I just a F$%^#ng idiot? The clips seemed seated, but I guess not. This is the second time in two years I've had trouble installing these little buggers, and I'm dying to know... MORE
Hi All, I just wanted to rant about the shoddy condition of the Midget that i am restoring at the moment. This is my first Midget i have ever owned and have always wanted to have an MG. So I purchased one about two months ago which was mechanically sound ( apart from the clutch) but is a bit shoddy bodywork wise. I ordered the replacement sills (inner & Outer) and started work today removing bits for the job. So where does the frustration come in to it you ask. A weekend spent taking a car apart is 'fun'... Hi fellas! I am coming back to you with a possible solution to my oil pressure problem. My problem was that to start with i had a very good oil pressure 60-80lb, but as the engine was warming up it gradualy went down. I think we have found the problem, and we recon it must be the pressure release valve that expands as everything is warming up and sets in a slightly open position. I have bought the ball type valve from Minispares and we planned on fitting it today, the engine is warm and we cant shift the... MORE
Well, I tried to look but file did not open. could you e-mail me one? Is it a 1275 with the 69 tranny? stuck in gear, have you tried all the fixes that have been posted? When was the last time it ran o.k.? Bill French HiltonHead frenchww@... 32473... MORE
Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE
Close but no cigar - the MkI/II Spridgets with 1098 engines had electric rev counters, though again, this is only a clue, not a definitive identifier of a car's age - this is just the sort of thing that gets swapped around when the tacho drive gearbox fails! Fellow listers, Any 1500 listers out there who have done a clutch replacement? I am at the point of refitting the new unit and all three of my manuals instruct me to mount the drive plate with the side saying "flywheel" towards the flywheel. Great logic except mine doesn't say anything. Neither does the one I'm replacing. If someone knows how to tell which way round to mount the bloody thing I'll have my engine back installed in a jiff. David, I think you stated it backwards. Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover. Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32399... MORE

Some guy with a 76 midget wrote me and asked... I have a 1976 Midget. The car has something on it I can't figure out. There is a cable from the speedometer head to a white box and from the white box to the transmission (for the speedometer gear). My question is the white box. On the back it says "percent of life used" and on my car it is 32. Does this correspond to the mileage on the speedometer? What is the box for? Anybody have an idea? Percent of WHAT life, or WHOSE? Be careful! If you cause oil to leak out the rear of the crank, you may well oil your clutch, and it's an engine out job to replace the disc! "joe blxfstz" 32335... MORE

Listers, I need to sell off some of my spare parts. I have several 948, 1098 and 1275 engine or partial engines to sell. One 1275 is a complete low mileage, clean and running engine. others are rebuildable cores, but pretty much everything I have is degreased and ready for whatever you'd like to use it for (table base?) I also have several MD 266 cams, mostly the narrow lobe variety for use in 948 or 1098 engines. I also have several used headers. all are the 3 into one type. I also have a complete rear clip from... Hi Cap'n and Jens, I guess I've got to be a lone noise in the wind here. I've always used Fram or Pennzoil filters for as long as I can remember. I've got a 1275 in my van that has almost 300,000 miles on it since a major rebuild. Did 105,000 mile on a quickie rebuild before that, on an engine that came out of a burned MG Midget wreck. Admittedly this engine is now pretty tired, but it still goes OK. I changed the oil and filter religiously at 5k miles, with nary a peep out of this... MORE
Hi All I am going to try to rebuild the master cylinder in my 79 midget this weak end I have the rebuild kit and the hone. I have never done one of these befor. Rick The answers to these questions are as long as they are short! I can tell you what I did, but I'm not sure it will help you in your situation. I stripped all my interior paint back to bare metal using Nitromors paint stripper, washed it down with water, dried it, cleaned it all with a wire brush zip wheel in an angle grinder, sprayed it with etch primer, high build primer filler and finally top coat. I removed the carpet glue and (one of the worst jobs of the lot) the underseal/bitumen panels on the trans tunnel... MORE
Yeah. Im going to have to find some other type of shoes to wear strictly for driving my Midget. My MR2 has come along way since those pics. 90% of the car has been painted now. All thats is left to paint is the aftermarket front and rear airdam and then reassembly. If you look at the third pic youll see that Iv put a driver side air vent. The first gen MR2s only had it on the right side. Iv also relocated the gas filler to the B pillar of both sides of the car and installed Datsun... MORE
Curt.. I've heard straight cut gear boxi at the track. They're all very loud as compared to the stock road boxi, which are also loud as compared to my Datsun 210 box. The first Datsun 210 I used was an original. It was extremely quiet. The 210 box I am now using is a rebuilt. The sychros are better but, the box has a distinct (but not unpleasant) whine in all gears. Your's may have been rebuilt at one point or another, so parts might not be as well- matched as in the original unit insofar as the first... MORE
(Sorry folks forgot the subject header last time.) A couple questions mostly for the racers in the group, but also any gearbox gurus. 1)Gear box whine: Got my retired racer, soon to be vintage racer Bugeye out for a quick (illegal) run down the road tonight. I have a rib case BMC competition (straight cut, non synchro) close ratio gear box. It whines VERY loudly in 1st through 3rd gears. 4th very was quiet. I wasn't surprised or worried about 1st & 2nd being noisy, but expected 3rd to be quiet. The two tracks I'm going to be running... MORE

These are strictly for reduced rolling resistance, not necessarily for improved performance, as certain things would increase your 'lap time' through worse handling. Fit narrow (standard 145) tyres and pump them up as hard as the highest recommended pressure; use the lowest viscosity oils in the transmission (consider ATF for the gearbox?); check/adjust the tracking to as close to zero as you can get it, and check all four wheels' alignment; remove any extra un-necessary weight. I also do the 'pushing out of the garage before starting' routine, but I can manage it by sitting in the car with... MORE
