(Sorry folks forgot the subject header last time.)
A couple questions mostly for the racers in the group, but also any
gearbox gurus.
1)Gear box whine:
Got my retired racer, soon to be vintage racer Bugeye out for a quick
(illegal) run down the road tonight. I have a rib case BMC
competition (straight cut, non synchro) close ratio gear box. It
whines VERY loudly in 1st through 3rd gears. 4th very was quiet. I
wasn't surprised or worried about 1st & 2nd being noisy, but expected
3rd to be quiet. The two tracks I'm going to be running this year are
all 3rd & 4th gear tracks.
Is a very whiney 3rd definately a sign of impending doom in this type
of box? Should I go ahead and run some events till it goes bad then
send it off to be rebuilt? Should I pull it now before I do some more
seriouse damage? I'm running Red line MTL in it if that matters.
If I do have it rebuilt, any suggestions who could do it near
Northern Illinois?
2)Brakes:
Maybe I'm just spoiled by the big 4 wheel discs in my 03 MINI Cooper,
but the brakes were certainly uninspiring for a race car. Felt like
my Dodge Caravan at best. I have front Spridget discs and rear drums
with competion shoes. The pads in front were dry and hardly worn but
are 22years old, should they be replaced despite looking good? Am I
just spoiled by the MINI brakes?
