G'day guys No, nothing to do with Ace Ventura. On eBay are a complete set of NOS Ace Mercury wheel caps, optional on early MG Midget, and rarer than rocking horse excrement. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33744&item=7988917546 Go gettem Colin "Colin Dodds" 37984... I got some racing 13x6s made by Aero for $40 a piece - the good news/bad news was that I had to replace my studs with 7/16" ones so I could run the correct lug nuts (1"). I had to find a dealer willing to call the factory for them. Bart makes some as well, but they were out of them right now. Jackie Cooper "Jackie Cooper" 37976... MORE
Hi, Jed! I live in a nice neighborhood, and my `79 Midget is garaged. However, I sometimes park in less than desirable areas and I have had issues with young jerks throwing beer cans, McDonald's waste, etc. into the cockpit of my car if not covered with a tonneau - in broad daylight in mall parking lots, etc.!! Also had a radio stolen once (before the car was garaged). The idiots tore open the top with a knife to crawl into the cockpit and ripped out the entire console. Radio was a Blaupunt with a "code," so it was... MORE
Hello all, I have a running MG Midget convertible, in excellent condition, that I love to death but am really needing to sell. I bought this car on Ebay last year, but have never driven it openly (by which I mean on public roads), had it insured, or had the title put in my name (I suffer from lack of funds). My brother has driven it, and says it handles quite well... the only defects we know of are: a minor hole in the exhaust pipe, a broken parking brake, and a leak in the braking system near the... Anybody any ideas on the best way to paint alloy castings? I need to repaint the alloy (zinc alloy?) castings on my steering wheel boss and am not sure what surface preparaion it needs to make sure the paint stays on! "Bruce" 37862... MORE
A trailer queen is a car that has been restored by a "cheque book mechanic" i.e. the owner never touches it, not even to check the oil. Someone else k eeps the car fluids monitored, keeps the paint looking bright, and has new tires put on it when the old ones dry rot from not being used. This is also the car that looks great, sells at auctions for $25,000 U.S., and is NEVER driven. It would drop the value!! Thus, it is trailered to every show it i s shown at, thus, "trailer queen" Brad who owns a... MORE
G'day guys There is a Mk I Midget steering wheel for sale on eBay. It is in horrible condition, but that is reflected in the price of $5 and it is repairable. Since it's different to the Bugeye wheel and rare as rocking horse excreta, one of you should grab it. Michael, you should buy it for your car. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4560502892&category=34200 avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 37768... MORE
David The inner tubes can be a bit hard to find. I was lucky enough that my local High Performance shop had some 13" on the shelf..........for over 10yrs. I was also able to find them at Pep Boys. A Tire wholsaler will be able to get them for you also, but you would probably have to buy a box of ten. Good luck Mike mk2sprite@... 37713... MORE

The Haynes manual is ok for the gearbox, but not really adequate for a complete rebuild of the diff. You need all the crown wheel and pinion setting information, most of which is in the factory manual; however, even this source has a couple of critical bits of info missing, which are the sizes of gauge blocks for setting the crownwheel and pinion positions. However, you can easily go some way to taking up some of the slack and at little cost, too. The thrust washers for the spider gears can be replaced without too much difficulty. Let me... MORE
Now cars with disc brakes on the front have a wheel cylinder with two pistons, affixed to the backing plate by means of a C-clip, and the hand brake lever is totally seperate and operates on the brake shoes not the wheel cylinder. Does this describe what you have? There are a number of manufacturers of these wheel cylinders - some use normal rubber cups, some use your Polo mint seal. There are even different versions of the Polo mint - same OD but different ID, depending on the whim of the manufacturer. The one thing they all have... MORE
Hi Phil,. The correct ones are readily available, just a tad spendy. The old ones are not usually worth rebuilding as you won't be doing anything to correct the rust and pits on the 2 steel pistons, and likely the pits in the aluminum are way deep. It also costs more to sleeve than to get new ones. Again, you'll do nothing about the 2 steel cyls when sleeved! Just buy new and get it done right. These wheel cyls are the same as on the Morris Minors. Later, Paul A Hi Phil, I believe rear cylinders were specified... MORE
A great idea - except for one thing - it doesn't work. For those of you who DO want to know how hot dogs are made: I drove around for a good while to make sure everything under the hood (er, bonnet), was up to normal op temps. Air temp 82F Water temp 180F (you metric guys will have work out C, or K or Under hood temp 130F whatever for yourselves) Then made 8 runs, 2 East and 2 West with underhood air intake and 2 East and 2 West with wheel well air intake. Good idea. It's switchable (two rubber plugs) from hot to cold air, so I can do a side-by-side. I'll give it a try on some good hot day. I think it pretty much has to be done on a real road to get the full effect of under bonnet vz wheel well temps. "joe blxfstz" 37491... MORE
I have been watching this thread on brake lines and there appears to be some confusion. There are no braided brake lines. You can get braded brake hoses that go from the brake line to the calipers or wheel cylinders. These have to be flexible to allow them to bend with wheel travel. Brake lines go from the MC to the wheels area. They do not flex. If you are replacing brake lines, buy a complete set of copper/nickel alloy lines from Moss or the usual suppliers. They are the correct length with all fittings attached, bend easily to... MORE
Well for what it's worth 32 years ago I flipped a 62 sprite by running off the road skidding sideways. Front wheels were in the ditch rear wheels were up in a yard ended up hitting a rock on the passenger side rocker panel which in turn put as airborne and we ended up in the middle of the road upside down. No roll bar I was sore without a scratch my friend ended up with seven stitches to the back of his head from the support bar for the top. I personally think in this case a roll... MORE
I the case of the 18 wheel you are stuffed, roll bar or not, As for T boned, roll bar is no use here either, but the spike in the steeing wheel would probbaly make the errant driver pay more attention and thus avoid the situation, ditto most of the other situations you are refering to. I have acquired a set of front cylinders, brake drums, shoes, and hub off an A40 Farina. I'm told these work well on the spridget as they give approx 50% more braking area. Apart from the A40 drums and shoes, what other A40 bits do I use eg wheel cylinder, hubs etc. Can anyone advise on any other reasonably priced front suspension mods? Thanks very much "bensengold48" 37299... MORE
Hello All! A while back you gave me some help with how to refurbish the wheels on my Midget. I just wanted to say, "thank you!" The fellow that painted the car insisted that I should not keep the original wheels. (The disadvantages of having friends help. They always give their opinion.) Anyway, the car is done and it and the wheels look great. (Even my friend admits it.) I've posted pictures in the "TRP 77 Midget" folder. Thanks! Tim "trpgrp" 37271... MORE

The Organization Of Spridget Handymen in Transit got together yesterday to swap out Larry Macy's engine. Larry got a rebuilt (A wedding present? How thoughtful.) and it was about time to do the deed. Kevin and Rob Valentine, Phil Nase (?), Bill Gilroy and I showed up at Larry's. I understand that Frank Clarici had some problems on the way back from Carlisle so he couldn't make it. I'm sure Frank will fill us in. First we pulled the old engine and tranny, then Kevin and Larry timed the new cam and finished the reassembly. The rest of us... MORE
