Paul, I have been reading this thread with interest. A lot of interesting ideas. Let me think a moment and apply my simple Polish logic. Before you go into motor....... you have marked crank pulley and it always stops in the same place. If you back it up, it stops a few degrees from the same place always? right? Then take it until it stops and check into plug holes and find if any pistons are at or very near TDC. If they are, there could be something in the cylinder that is hitting the piston. If non of... I read this this somewhere before, the bit I don't agree with is ..... Recently I heard of another reason that makes a lot of sense, early powered boats used automotive engines and often were simply the engine in the middle of a boat with an extension on the rear of the crankshaft to drive a propeller at the back of the boat. But I say The early engined boats were steam driven , as everybody knows Steam engines run just as fast in either direction . Well if you are using explorer for your mails you could enter "tools" and click on "message rules" an d then "mails". Here you have the possibility to automaticaly have mails deleted from the server if they come from certain posters or contains certain words specified by yourselves. Chris That 'vision in green' looks far too nice for you, I thought you were looking for one that needed a little work? ;) Seriously though it looks good, nice straight body, nice bright shiny paintwork, sills painted the correct colour black this time, wire wheels look in good condition, useful extras - boot rack and roll over bar and most importantly it looks like it been cared for and looked after. OK....in for dime, in for a dollar. I ordered the wire wheels today...13x5.5 inch. I plan to put 175x70s on them as this will give me roughly the same diameter...no? Any brand suggestions? Sources? G'day Robert I have sold and/or fitted about 5 sets of MGB wheels to Sprites. Standard MGB is 14 x 5, and chrome ones are about 2/3 the price of Sprite/Midget chrome wheels. With low profile tyres, they have close to the same rolling radius as the original 13" wheel, but they fill out the mudguards much better. And they fit under the standard square wheel arch. No modification at all is required on the rear. On the front, you might need to relieve the brake caliper a little, as the wheel centre is a different shape and on... MORE
Chris I do understand. It's just that I'm trying to get you to avoid the pitfall I fell into! I wa =3D=0D s much the same as you, did lots of research, got itchy feet, looked at loads of cars, =3D=0D finally fell in love with one, nice colour, wire wheels, looked pretty good, had, h =3D=0D ad lots of work done to it by the previous owners (mechanical) took the plunge =3D=0D and bought it. Robert, I am far from an expert on MG Midget handling having about 1200 miles of wheel time to date. Some of that time the car didn't run too well. That said, I love the way the car handles. In my opinion it is somewhat firmer and "blockier" if that makes sense. The car always jerked around beartifully; lefts, rights long curves etc. It feels more solid somehow with the new underpinnings. I believe someone on the list in the past stated that tossablitiy of the car declines with a wheel/tire combo that is too large. If memory serves,... MORE
Robert, Can't resist contributing to this as I just switched to 5.5 inch wheels meself. My car is a SWA and the wheels fitted are Vega pattern American Racing wheels about 20 yrs. old (don't ask) but in fine shape. I am running pre-rubber bumper front springs and stock rears. I had to take the front wheel well up an inch and grind the rear arch "tuck in" flat to get them to fit with 175 tires. Like you, I read Big Daddy and drew Rat Finks. I am now facing installing some kind of flares front and rear... MORE
you could be take a different tack and fit MGB 14" wheels and low profile tyres (tires, if you prefer!) - low profile inner tubes should be available. B wheels are plentiful enough to experiment with, without lashing out on expensive special orders. Regards David "David Jacobs" 27344... MORE
I can't help just jumping in here. I am also from the Rat Fink generation of hot rodders. We used to solve our wheel problems (read no money for Mags) in the old days by taking the steel wheels to a guy who would cut out the centers and reverse them to get a wider stance and weld them back in. When we wanted wide wheels, he would do the reverse center trick and then cut the rim around on a lathe and add a ring of steel, what ever width we wanted to go. 1 inch, 1.5 inch... MORE
OK, Now I have located someone to supply the wheels I thought I wanted...13x5.5 -60 spoke, chrome and stainless steel, tubeless wheels. However, the supplier gave me this caveat: Dayton does offer a 13 x 5.5 inch wheel but indicates it is too big for the SPM and cannot be responsible if it is ordered and does not fit correctly. If you want to go a head with it I will get the part number and create it on our site as a one time part. IT can be had chrome 60 spokes tube or tubeless. Takes about 6... MORE
Wes Not on my car they don't no, which is a GAN5 MK3 1970 They're part of the rear loom, which connects into the main loom via some bullet connectors near the indicator switch. From what I recall, the rear loom runs along the sill up into the side well by the rear wheel arch and then comes out by the rear tail lights, and runs along the back of the boot. Hi All, I have posted a directory (00 - Spotlights) to show you my new spots on my '64 Sprite. They are Lucas FT6's with replacement Sealed Beams. Wired in parallel, I put a Lucas toggle switch to the right of the steering wheel on the dash. In the end I made the brackets out of aluminium to fashion the metal and then took it to a metal worker who made a set for =A310 out of 3mm Stainless Steel. Nigel (& ohters), Nigel, congratulations having the car moving again! Mine is already for 4 years in the state yours has been for 15....(on axle stands). Did your spray the bottom already, or are you gonna remove the wheels and suspension again? I'm thinking of doing the whole bottom before putting it on wheels again. I've the same kind of problems as you have (small garage, not to much light, damp & cold) but am considering this approach because imperfections won't really show up due to the layer of flexible undercoating hiding them. Years ago (1980), when I first got my MKII, there was a book with it, given to me by the previous owner. The book has since vanished, and I would like to replace it but I can't remember much about it, including the name. It was a manual of some type with an interesting twist. At the end of the book there was a story about a couple guys driving their Sprite accross southern US (I think) I remember them discussing physics such as Boyles gas law and how it would pertain to their tire pressure when the drove... I know how that feels, Nigel. When I started working on my Sprite last year the tires were flat and had glued themselves to the floor. It had been stored against the wall for 15 years. I had to use a long pole to pry/slide it away from the wall far enough to get an air hose to one of the tires so it would sort of roll. Now I have wheel dollies under all four wheels and it is easy to even move it sideways. It was a great feeling to move it out into natural light after... MORE
Cheers Cap'n! Well thats an estimate! I've been here (where I live now) for about 15 years and it was towed from my parents house and pushed into the garage when I moved, and then put on axle stands. I've pushed it out on the trolley jack and turned it round, but it's never moved on all four wheels since it's been in the garage, so yeah first time in 15 years since its moved on all four wheels! I have to say it did look good, with that classic 'tail up stance' that Spridgets have, I've missed seeing... MORE
Yep, finally got the car moving on all 4 wheels! Admittedly I had to push it, but hey it moved! I finished off fitting the front suspension, got the hubs on and went down to the local petrol station to pump up the tires, got them on, lowered it off it's axle stands and pushed it out of the garage - moving on all four wheels for the first time in oooh 15 years at least! So yeah, it was an exciting moment for sure; you'll have to excuse my exhuberance, but I've waited a very long time for... MORE
