(Sorry folks forgot the subject header last time.) A couple questions mostly for the racers in the group, but also any gearbox gurus. 1)Gear box whine: Got my retired racer, soon to be vintage racer Bugeye out for a quick (illegal) run down the road tonight. I have a rib case BMC competition (straight cut, non synchro) close ratio gear box. It whines VERY loudly in 1st through 3rd gears. 4th very was quiet. I wasn't surprised or worried about 1st & 2nd being noisy, but expected 3rd to be quiet. The two tracks I'm going to be running... MORE

Generally run it on 24/22 on 165 70 R13 tyres. I could go a bit harder but I wouldn't want to go beyond about 30/28. Actually, I am glad I posted the original question, which I hoped would produce some informative discussion. Despite that, I do not in fact know if my car is any heavier to push than any other Spridget. I don't think we have established that at all. But there is some food for thought here, and certainly I need to be checking on a few details. Guy "Guy Weller" 32038... MORE

Hang on. This is a daily used car. 30,000miles in 3 years since full rebuild ALL new brake parts at that time Regular maintenance - like every 2 weeks I grease the kingpins, top up dashpots etc.etc. Using silicon brake fluid and flush and replace that every year - although its due another change about now. I do a 80 mile daily round trip to work, in fast, heavy traffic conditions. My life depends on this car being in good condition. I started this "thread" to see what other experience might be out there. I don't actually think that... MORE

could be right about the diff - the modern car will probably have helical cut spur gears where the Sprite will have the hypoid crown wheel and pinion, which has a bit more sliding contact between the tooth faces - more friction? David "David Jacobs" 32006... MORE

what sort of wheel bearings does the Pug have, compared to the Sprite? (can't see that making a huge difference, though) David "David Jacobs" 31984... MORE

David, all good sugestions for a race car, but mine is strictly for road use. What puzzles me is why my daughter's car which weighs more, is actually a good deal easier to push. Wheels & tyres are of comparable size and pressures so there must be some other reason. I am sure there must be some easy gains to be made here, for normal street use. Guy "Guy Weller" 31971... Hi Guy, I suspect that you have some calipers that are ready for a rebuild. These pistons don't retract as the new cars do, but merely relax. If the dust seals are stiff and totally dried out it will inhibit the relaxing of the pads from the rotors. I rebuild a lot of these calipers and sometimes it's almost impossible to get out the pistons because there's 40 years of crud and dried up rubber involved. Another possibility on the calipers is the m/cyl is holding too much pressure on the system with it's internal residual valve. A suggestion... MORE

Who sells these tires? I need one for my 74 Midget. TireRack doesn't have any this size? Thanks, Redrider "redrider417" 31960... MORE

These are strictly for reduced rolling resistance, not necessarily for improved performance, as certain things would increase your 'lap time' through worse handling. Fit narrow (standard 145) tyres and pump them up as hard as the highest recommended pressure; use the lowest viscosity oils in the transmission (consider ATF for the gearbox?); check/adjust the tracking to as close to zero as you can get it, and check all four wheels' alignment; remove any extra un-necessary weight. I also do the 'pushing out of the garage before starting' routine, but I can manage it by sitting in the car with... MORE

OK, time for some fun. Anyone here race their MG in solo II? Stories and suggestions would be appreciated. I've done AMA Motorcycle Road Racing, track days in my Beretta, and raced a friends 969 a couple of times when he was laid up injured. I was just checking out the rules for MGs, and they look to be in a fairly fun class for Solo II, and the very minimal prep work makes it quite feasable (and the fact that I own a B and a Midget makes this more fun). Any thoughts on the following: 1. Battery... MORE

I usually push my Sprite out of the garage each morning before I set off. The garage has an interconnecting door to the kitchen so I try to minimise the exhaust fumes in there. The point is this. It is quite heavy to push. The brakes are not binding and the tyre pressures are at 24 / 22. It should weigh in at about 1520 Pounds (Sprite,1971) By comparison, my daughter's Peugeot 106 has a kerb weight of 1675 Pounds and rolls very easily, you hardly have to lean on it. So what views are there on minimising rolling... MORE

Some of you may remember a mail i wrote a few days agoo were i told you my float bowls went almost empty. Well i think i have found the cause of this problem as well. I changed the petrol line from the tank yesterday and when removing the old one that had a joint before the pump (mechanical) with a short piece of rubber tubing the hose clip on one end was loose and the actual rubber tubing was loose as well. I could just pull it off by hand easily. I recon the pump must have sucked... MORE

Bob... Larger bowls are of no concern. Pump doesn't care unless the engine is highly tuned and than one can use a higher pressure (output) with a pressure reg. I find the low pressure (LP) Facet (4psi+-) mounted in the rear in place of the SU... works fine without a pressure regulator on SU's. With my PO'd "Vizardized" 1340 (90HP at the rear wheels) I used the HP Facet (6-8psi) with a pressure reg. set to 2.5psi for a 45DCOE. This engine went to 7k and was mostly used between 3500-4000rpm on the highway. It was also capable of... MORE

Hi Everyone i have to replace the back brake lines from the back union to the wheel cylinder But I have a problem a couple of fittings are rounded a bit so i cant use a wrench (spanner) on them and i dont want to use vice grips unless i can get new fittings and lines with out buying a complete set from moss. Can any one tell me if the fitting have special threads or can i get them from a reg auto parts store. I have a flare tool (bubble)so i can size the line to fit.... MORE

my '77 midget is supposed to run on 145/82 x13 tires in Norway. I have put on 165/70 x 13 on stock rims. They fit quite nice, only some sounds when I turn sharply to the left out for the gaz statiom. regards Thorvald "Thorvald (Norway)" 31796... MORE

I was fortunate to have a pleasant weekend, with a variety of list members, as well as looking for some old car parts. Wednesday had me preparing the Impala, and display driver, for the trip to be sold. Thursday, I headed up to north Fort Worth, to meet up with Bruce Lowry, and his friend Shane. I met up with them a bit later than expected, as rain had slowed Bruce down to a crawl through Dallas. I parked the Impala next to their spaces, and installed my dummy driver, Gene Simmons. I had found a mask of him... MORE

I have used POR-15 in my front wheel wells and engine compartment and have mixed feelings on it. It has a great shine to it when finished and I liked that aspect. One problem that I had was that as it cured/dried it formed bunches of tiny bubbles on the surface. When I talked to their tech people they said that the humidity must have been too high and that it is sensitive to humidity. They recommended that I sand all the bubbled surfaces with 440 paper and to put on another coat. This happened last fall and I... MORE

Bruce, I run a beautiful (I think) set of American Racing wheels on my Midget. They are Chevy Vega hub pattern. I'm going to post pix of the car next week so you can see them if so inclined. From what I've read and heard the biggest tire you can run on the Ro's is 170/70/13. I can tell you from personal experience that 5.5 inch rim and 165/70's will not fit without modifications. Looking for new wheels for my Midget. The Minilites are nice, but expensive. Are there other choices available? Also, if I keep the stock Rostyles, what other sizes can I use without tires rubbing against the body? All advice is appreciated. Bruce "redrider417" 31779... MORE

Hi guys! I need some help here. I have a problem with my newly installed 1275 engine, what happens is that when the car is warming up with the choke out everything is normal - just the normal amount of smoke from the exhaust. But when the engine is getting warmer and the choke is pushed gradualy back it starts smoking clouds og grey smoke especially when i give it throttle, it only lasts for a short while then its back to normal. Could this be condensation causing it? Cheers Jens Jens P. Maudal jens.maudal@... Greetings from "BottomsUp Brewery"... MORE

That was it, you were right, the rubber carb diaphram is riddled with slices, six in all, that bicycle-spoke out from the center. I hadn't wanted to check that at first since i just rebuilt the carb less than 8 months and 1000miles ago. Now to order a replacement and figure out what ate the thing up so fast.
