Hang on.
This is a daily used car.
30,000miles in 3 years since full rebuild
ALL new brake parts at that time
Regular maintenance - like every 2 weeks I grease the kingpins, top up
dashpots etc.etc.
Using silicon brake fluid and flush and replace that every year - although
its due another change about now.
I do a 80 mile daily round trip to work, in fast, heavy traffic conditions.
My life depends on this car being in good condition.
I started this "thread" to see what other experience might be out there. I
don't actually think that I have a problem specific to this car. But suspect
that they all have a relatively high rolling resistance when compared to
modern cars.
So is there anything we can learn about efficiency?
There have been some good suggestions.
Cap'n mentioned that if you put the brakes on whilst stationary, then there
is nothing in the system to ease the pads off the disks again - at least not
until they rotate a bit. But then that isn't going to effect rolling
resistance when on the move.
I think the most likely causes relate to mechanical resistance in the
pre-loaded differential gears plus the use of relatively high viscosity oils
in the back axle.
Maybe the wheel bearings are adding to the resistance. They are certainly
much heavier construction than the lightweight bearings in a small modern
car.
OK, there have also been some humerous replies - at least I thought they
were - and thanks for that.
