Roger I have a 65 and a 66 Sprite (both MKIII Sprites) the 66 had no cowl when I acquired her (she had an aftermarket leather cloth thing instead) I fitted a new cowl and painted it black in line with Horler's bible. I have just checked my 65 ( which is a basket case I am rebuilding) and to my surprise it has a red cowl. I even scratched some paint off (hell it will need a respray anyway) and can find no layer of black between the red and bare metal, so you may well be correct.... MORE

It's questionable without trying them for fit. I CAN confirm the tyres are too low profile for a Midget - the rolling radius will be way too small unless you want the car seriously low geared. Regards David "David Jacobs" 28567... MORE

OK, Ed, The reason I used the word assumption was to indicate exactly that. It was an ASSumption, and I am well aware of what that implies. The point is that even allowing for this, and for some likely inaccuracies in the data provided by Mr. Clausanger the estimated production does come out at least in the correct sort of time frame for my car - 3 weeks before first registration - which is a documented date. That's good enough for me as I am not really that bothered where precisely in the time/space continuum the thing first turned... MORE
The stud pattern is the same for early Metros, but I'm not sure when it changed. If you're talking 13" ones from a GTA or Advantage they might be after the change point. Early Turbo 13" ones should fit. The offset is different so you might get clearance problems unless you use spacers. Regards David "David Jacobs" 28552... MORE

Bill Just fit new rear wheel cylinders they only cost about 10 UK pounds or less each and can be fitted in an hour or so and will work fine for years. Back in May I blew a wheel cylinder out on my way down from Scotland to Cumbria while leading a classic car run. Replaced mine at the roadside then spent the next couple of days driving up and down mountains before driving the 400 miles home. Pulled both rear cylinders off the following weekend checked them out and refitted them in the workshop just to make sure.... MORE
Nigel, Well I lied! The garage ( I built it when we first moved here) is 9' 4", interior, but has a 22" workbench down one side which reduces the available floor space to 7' 6". That was the maximum width garage I could get between the house and our neighbour's wall, whilst retaining a "back passage" (excuse the phrase!) footpath to get to the back garden. Guy My god your garage is even narrower than mine! Mines about 8 foot 6 if I remember right. I was also 'given' some of those castors by a friend of mine, but sadly 4 of them are being used to wheel the engine around, and I can't do much with the other two. What our American friends over in the good old US of A don't seem to realise is that space here, unlike in the US is at an absolute premium and to even have a garage at all is a luxury, and only millionaries ever seem... Steve Woohoo! Many congrats. I don't think I am ahead of you Steve, I'm just finishing off the final primer coats on the passenger side wing ready for colour - that will be the last 'bit' on the car that needs to be colour coated. I still have both doors, bootlid and bonnet to colour coat as well. I don't know if you have this book or not - 'Restoring Sprites and Midgets - an Enthusiasts Guide' by Grahame Bristow (Brooklands Books) but it really is a very useful book in terms of reassembly. you'd see them in the UK - with the advent of different weight allowances a few years back, a lot of articulated tractor units were converted by adding an additional non-powered load bearing axle with just two wheels either in front of, or behind the (single) driven axle, so two on the front, four driven wheels, two non driven wheels and eight on the trailer makes Don's 16! I make it pre- Oct 1961 when the boot handle changed from L to T. But as David says the steering wheel changed to black at Nov 61, so I'd put it somewhere around Oct-Nov 61. I'd be interested to know how it got a 66-67 Reg plate though! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 28150... MORE

G'day Jorge At first I thought the car was an Alvis. But the knock offs have me doubting. English and European cars with wire wheels tend to have smaller knock-offs holding on the wheels. The American cars of the same period tended to the large style as you can see on your pictures. There looks like there is a badge in the centre of the knock-off. Hi Bill, What sort of state/ age are the flexible rubber hoses? Perhaps they have swollen and collapsed internally. The pressure bleeder I use takes its air supply from an inflated tyre so operates at about 30psi. I guess you could increase pressure without any worries. Guy "Guy Weller" 28118... MORE

Hi Robert. Actually, if you read my post you will see that we are in full agreement. We both state the source of the increased pressure as coming past the pistons, rather than the volume displaced by the pistons which is balanced out. And we both refer to the oil leak problem that ensues. Interesting stuff about filling a 2-stroke crankcase. This was effectively the best way of increasing the compression ratios on a 2 stroke. I never went as far as you with using bondo, but I do remember there were a number of firms selling crank-case fillers... MORE
Stewart If you're re-fitting the RB's I really see no point (or benefit) of fitting 1275 springs, there's a lot more to the ride height than simply changing the springs. Yes, that's what I mean by 'half wings'. I got away with only fitting the small repair sections to the lower 12 inches of the area behind the rear wheel. I debated at length about whether to fit 'half wings' or the smaller repair sections and decided in the end that the 'inner wings' weren't that bad and as most of the rear wing was in pretty good condition...
