I have a 65 and a 66 Sprite (both MKIII Sprites) the 66 had no cowl when I
acquired her (she had an aftermarket leather cloth thing instead) I fitted a
new cowl and painted it black in line with Horler's bible. I have just
checked
my 65 ( which is a basket case I am rebuilding) and to my surprise it has a
red
cowl. I even scratched some paint off (hell it will need a respray anyway)
and
can find no layer of black between the red and bare metal, so you may well
be
correct. You may have helped me even more since my Christmas present was a
heritage certificate which stated the car had a red interior when it left
the
factory, although it is now black, so if your theory is correct this agrees
with
the red interior (which I am going to query with BMH).
I think I may be able to help you since I am the Cambridgeshire area
representative
for the Midget and Sprite club and Terry Horler is the official club
archivist and
a founder member, hence I have his phone number and address and will contact
him
tomorrow and ask the question and get back to you. I am not sure which side
of the
pond you are but that is a UK tomorrow. And yes I agree let us have it
correct
although Terry is allowed the odd error in such a great book (check out the
mineral
blue Sprite photo on page 86. Terry says only the quaterlight mirror is
non-original,
then look at the gaps between the headlight rim bottoms and the sidelights
(the passenger
side wing is of the post 68 design with the lower sidelight and is hence a
non-original
replacement). I only noticed because my 66 had the same problem before I
started cutting
and welding.
