Woohoo! Many congrats.
I don't think I am ahead of you Steve, I'm just finishing off the final primer
coats on the passenger side wing ready for colour - that will be the last 'bit'
on the car that needs to be colour coated. I still have both doors, bootlid and
bonnet to colour coat as well.
I don't know if you have this book or not - 'Restoring Sprites and Midgets - an
Enthusiasts Guide' by Grahame Bristow (Brooklands Books) but it really is a
very useful book in terms of reassembly. It's been written with the
're-sheller' in mind and not a 'shell-restorer' so much of the information in
the book is about refurbishing components and putting them back on the
shell - I strongly encourage you to get a copy if you can.
He's set out a sequence of re-assembly that I will pretty much be following
and I agree with you that your first task is to get the suspension components
on so you can move the car. Your next job should be to go round all the
threads and clean them out with taps and dies.
I'm not sure I agree entirely with his sequence, but its a good basis to start
from, and obviously as you're putting the suspension components on first (as
I did) ignore them in the re-assembly sequence.
I'd be interested in what other folks who've been down this route say about
this re-assembly sequence.
His sequence of re-assembly is -
1 Pedal Box, Master Cylinders, pedals, brake pipes, clutch pipe, control box
and fuses, engine bay splash plates (left loose) wiring harness (front and
rear) oil capillary tube.
2 Crash roll, wiper wheelboxes, rack and motor, heater vent doors, demister
nozzles and tubes.
3 Doors and Door fittings, windscreen
4 Crash roll, and lift the dot pegs (in dash top), washer jets and tubing
5 Dashboard, speedo cable
6 Heater box and motor
7 Stub Axle Assembly, Brake hoses (front) Steering rack, Front Wheels
8 Rear Axle, Rear Springs, Brake Hoses rear, Handbrake Assembly, Rear wheels
9 Exterior lamps, Horns, Oil Cooler Assembly if being fitted
10 Fuel tank, Fuel Filler pipe and neck, Fuel pump, Fuel pipes
11 Boot fittings and boot trim, Spare wheel, Tonneau covers and tools, Bonnet
fittings and trim (not stay rod)
12 All Exterior brightwork esp sill , door, wing mouldings and badges
13 Grommets and sill drain plugs, under carpet set, carpets (stick down only),
trim panels, interior trim finishing detail, hood
14 Bumpers, number plates
15 Chassis plate, Engine with ancillary components, Gearbox, Engine earthing
strap, Propshaft
16 Clutch bleeding, fresh air tube for heater, oil cooler hoses, Steering
column, throttle and choke cables, Exhaust, Rad and water hoses, Water
expansion tank, Air filters
17 Gear lever gaiter, Carpet set (stud secured items) Seats, Ash Tray, Parcel
shelf
18 Steering wheel
19 Grille surround and Grille
Full service, don't connect battery till all connections have been made, engine
timing.
