Hi all, The generic model Purolator / Facet solid state fuel pump comes in several pressure models: 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 psi, 25 GPH Delivery 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 psi, 30 GPH Delivery I found the following information on the pressure of the original AUF 300 SU pumps AZX 1307 2.7 psi AZX 1308 3.8 psi both listed as 18 gal per hour. Question is . . . which model Purolator / Facet solid state fuel pump would work best as a replacement for the SU pump on a 74 Midget? Anyone had any experience with these pumps? Don Don May... Jim, I might share with you the start up procedure my dad taught me. I think it works well for older rebuilt motors, not the new crate motors of today etc. When ready to start, add regular oil, 30w or even 20w single weight out of the ground oil. Pull plugs after static timing, a squirt of oil in the cylinders, crank engine with plugs out and ignition off until you see oil pressure. Even better to have the valve cover off to make sure oil reaches the rockers. Put in plugs and valve cover. Put pans of tap... MORE

Jim...what Colin said. :) Do NOT use a low-friction oil in your (older) rebuilt motor or the rings will more than likely NOT "seat" as the bores will more than likely "glaze" and you'll have a "re-do" on your hands. Use a normal 10W-40wt mineral based "SF" oil for break-in. Change out filter and oil within 100 miles (to remove initial metal contamination) and again at 400 more miles for the same reason. After initial 500 mile break-in (don't forget to re-torque the head and re-adjust the valves accordingly...then the carbs.) The "new" factory motors are a different story... MORE

Some may remember my telling of my purchase on Ebay of an Haynes MGB manual, and a Haynes Weber manual (includes SU and Stromberg) at a good price. Well, the seller, Bookmarz, has apparently just given them to me free. I tracked them when they didn't show up in 10 days, and got a form letter email back telling me how to trace the shipment on their web page. I waited a couple of days and tried again, and when no info showed on the tracking site, I emailed a complaint. They sent the same form letter again and... MORE

Mike, My 75 had the manual choke but I would recommend using a stock set up first and then make improvements. Manual conversion kits are readily available from Vicky B anyway. You SHALL NOT remove the gearbox unless thou has first shifted the motor to a special place........... outside the car. If you're sticking with the Stromberg definitely buy the tool. My 76 1500 has a original lucas (as far as I know) and it does have a vacuum line from carb to distributor. "Kevin Gastin" 37825... MORE

this might be a dumb question, but is there supposed to be a vacuum line between the distributor and the carb, or not? It's got the Opus distrib, and the vacuum port on both the carb and the distrib are blanked off. Is this okay, or did the DPO screw it up? I know I can run with the EGR not hooked up (NH- no emissions inspections) but could this be the source of the car running really lean? Thanks in advance, George "chuibuddy" 37823... MORE

You building a "Town/Country" or "Highway" driver, Bruce? ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL..... "60"overbore will pull up low end torque (increases compression ratio) whilst increasing "revability" (more "square" bore/stroke numbers) As can be seen, the foregoing improvement lends itself automatically to a "hairier" cam quite nicely (without compromising the low end). The question is "how hairy" for your specific application? Thus, the initi al question at the top of the page, Bruce. Vizard's book contains an excellent description of many "grinds". For town/country, the numbers associated with an MD266 give a nice general improvement all-around with slight emphasis on mid-rang... MORE

Hi: Since it seems to be slow I Have a question. I am a relatively new guy to the group; located in the desert of Oregon with a 79 Midget that I recently purchased. It starts and runs great, but when warm with just a touch of the trottle will accelerate to about 1500 rpm and hang there for a few seconds then gradually slow back to idle. Anyone have an easy answer. Has the original Zenith Carb. TIA Vern Vern 37708... MORE

"Take it from the grille area...." Exactly as I've set mine up, through a 4" tube which feeds incoming air into the carb area at speed. Would do better with a cold air "box" obviously!! :) Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 37521... MORE

What works for me is a big hole in the hood, and the air cleaner sticking up thru it. No moving parts and lots of intake howl under heavy throttle. See last picture at http://tinyurl.com/5a92d But I do like the drink mix. It got up in the 90s here this week, first time in a couple of years. Think I'll have one now. H "hamondale" 37506... MORE

You guys are all off the map on cool air induction. What works for me is crushed ice in a glass and enough vodka to float the ice. Open the bonnet and place a Manhattan glass each of the vodka ice mixture on each carb. Wait 5 minutes, remove the glasses from the carb, close the bonnet and start the engine. Hear that? It runs great. Drink the contents of the two glasses and go back in the house. You're too drunk to drive. There was some discussion about insulating exhaust manifolds (headers, extractors, etc) and about keeping heat from the carbs. I wondered about that, did a little reading, and a little PV=nRT stuff, and it looks like a cool air supply to the carbs might add a few HP. Maybe. Anyway, not being one to spend money extravagantly (the wife doesn't agree BTW), I put together a $10 cool air intake. It's easier to see than explain, so take a peek at the cool air photos. Now, the question is - if it adds, say 3 or 4 HP, how on... MORE

I've got it on my A series' LCB, but that was mainly to keep exhaust heat away from the carb float bowls before I had a proper heatshield in place. Can't say I noticed anything other than not getting fuel vaporisation. David "David Jacobs" 37441... MORE

New to the Yahoo group, hello and thanks in advance... Has anyone out there had experience with 7 or 8 port cylinder heads? Vizard's guide has a whole 3 paragraphs on the subject, Stapleton has one! I came across an old issue of Retro Cars (May '04) that reviewed A series engine tuning and and turned me onto this option. I've gone to Mini-Spares UK website and priced the unit ($$$- but cheaper than the K-series engine swap, which would be way too hard to do living Stateside). I finally have my 1500 back on the road and am able to drive it agian after 16 years of having it in bits. I have a number of questions, some are 1500 only and some will be relavnt to late 1275. First one, What RPM is 60MPH? My car is alagedly giving 60MPH at 4K RPM in 4th gear, given I was on the motorway keeping up with traffic and overtaking some of it I am not convinced it is reading right! at points it was reading close to 70, others lower than 60, but the revs remained... David.... ..the "tubes" are not necessarily a tip off to fixed or biased needles on the HS2's.... G'day Jeremy Your car probably had a PVC (Positive Crankcase Ventillation) valve on the inlet manifold, connected via a rubber hose to the engine breather. When you had your foot off the throttle, the partial vacuum in the inlet manifold helped to reduce the pressure in the sump, thus (in theory if seldom in practice) minimising oil leaks out of the rear main bearing. This PCV valve was later deleted, and the hose from the engine breather went to a plastic Y-piece and then via two short rubber tubes to these pipes on the carbies. You have two options.... MORE

Jeremy, Just had a go-round with my carbs which are earlier with no vent tubes. If my experience is any example the carbs will "Y" off the valve cover and provide negative pressure in the valve train. This is a good thing. If my understanding of the setup is correct you need to hook this up or you will leak oil from strange places. In my case out of the dipstick tube among others.
