G'day Cap'n I think it's RON. There is only one octane measurement over here, down under. And yes, it's unleaded. With one of those in-line zinc fuel catalyst thingies to protect the valve seats. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 26237... MORE

Colin states (in part), "We run 9.5-10.5 to 1.....on 98 octane fuels.." Ass-u-me "unleaded" or "low-lead", Colin but... is this "RON" or "PON" as to octane value? Methinks "RON". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26223... MORE

Colin at sprite parts wrote I happen to have a brand new 12G295 head, still in the BMC wax paper. So I measured it for you. It is exactly 2.754" thick. So, That means it's just inside the drawing tolerance of 2.75" +/- 0.005" However,Colin The depth dimension of the combustion chamber - could you give us a dimension of this please. ,( which is more critical to find out out if the engine face has been machined) In fact any dimensions for a brand new head would be useful. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I include part of an email I sent... Thanks for the replies. While I was out in the garage the idea of cc'ing the head came to me. Had to reinstall the valves in one chamber and used a left over piece of 1/4" plexi from my windbreaker and cc'ed that chamber. I had a big needle that came with cc markings (came in a do-it-yourself printer ink replacement kit). The head has not been skimmed! I've removed the valves and it is ready for the head shop. Reguarding the SU's on your 1275/1380, you can get the manifold from an MGB, cut the center and then run a pair of HS4's. :) Gives lots of power and fits under the Bugeye bonnet. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 26144... MORE

Hi Seem to be having trouble getting enough fuel from tank to engine. I get excellent fuel pressure from end of line (at the tank) to carb. Once it's hooked to tank I get drastic pressure drop. The car will idle and rev fine, even drive ok but when I punch it out it dies out. No fuel at carb. I have had tank off a couple times and it is clean. Air blows through pickup tube nice and strong. This is a '79 1500 Midget with the tank with vent tube that goes into emissions system. I have... MORE

Can you stop shouting! (turn your caps lock off) Yes there are minis with twin SU carbs, but they are Mini Coopers (real mini coopers not the overgrown lump of lard built by BMW). There other cars with twin SU's on A-Series engines , but by far the most common are spridgets. The correct brass top carbs that a frogeye would have however are frogeye only IIRC and very hard to source. IIRC the 1300GT, Riley elf, Riley kestrel, Mini Cooper, AH sprite and MG midget were the only BMC cars to have the twin SU's on an a-series... MORE

Well....Big Bob.... I cannot source this engine number but... "ass-u-me" ing a high compression 948, the U standing for remote change gearbox "over here". A standard set of Spridget 1.25 SU's with AN needles and blue springs should work very well, I would think. Thing is, you would want this on the better flowing Cooper twin intake manifold if at all possible instead of the stock Spridget (worse flowing) type. And then, the carb mounting angle might be just different enough that use of the Cooper intake manifold might require a little fetteling under there to get proper clearance... MORE

HI GUYS! I HAVE BEGUN TO RESTORE AN 1960 MK1 FROGEYE. THE ENGINE IN THE CAR SEEMS TO BE AN AUSTIN A40 OR A50 WITH A SINGLE ZENITH CARB. THE CARB IS TOO HIGH TO CLOSE THE BONNET SO I WAS WONDERING IF I COULD SWAP TO TWIN SU CARBS. I GOT MY HANDS ON A SINGLE MINI SU CARB WITH MANIFOLD WHICH FITTED PERFECTLY BUT IT WAS STILL A LITTLE TOO HIGH. ARE THERE MINIS WITH TWIN SU CARBS AT AN ANGLE OR EVEN A SINGLE SU OFF A MORRIS MINOR THAT WOULD SUIT MY CAR? REGARDS, ROBERT... MORE

I also think Minis had the carbs at a slightly different angle to Spridgets, so they could squeeze in betweent he engine and bulhead. The Mini manifold I got for a pair of 1" SUs definitely has too steep an angle to fit my 1275 Midget, so the front carb would have rubbed against the bonnet. I'm not sure about the other fwd cars, as they had more room to fit stuff in. Stewart, is the fibreglass of your bonnet thicker than a steel one would be? This is often the case. Hmmm, could be several things. With these plastic filters, as I recall, the fuel flows into the centre of the filter element and outwards so you don't see when it's full of clag. T hat said, you can drive on long cruising stretches fine. IT could therefore be the fuel pump. This is (if it is as standard) mounte d under the 'rear seat' and has a crude (but effective electro-mechanical m echanism akin to a doorbell. IT contains a set of electrical points which detoriarate over time which can lead to the pump 'sticking'. Often a bang on... MORE

Hi all, my name is Julian from Uk (Nottingham) and I am a newcomer to the site so p lease treat me gently. I have purchased an absolutely beautiful (I would say that wouldn't I) 1967 MG Midget in Red, wire wheels, chrome bumpers, leather trim with white pip ing...mmmmm Anyway. I have a little problem in that after a long run with no junctions I often have to sit in traffic queues to get into the centre of the City. Julien... Well, could be an old or weak fuel pump, lack of a heat shield between carbs and engine (it gets hot under there when not moving at speed) causing fuel to percolate or "vapour lock", or lack of a vented fuel cap (though the latter is usually a case of fuel starvation which shows up under load..as in climbing a long hill with the foot well down). So, number one, check for the heat shield (basically a metal plate upon which the throttle return springs are mounted in the stock set-up). If it's "there"....go to... ...number two; at... MORE

Ah, yes... The Nash Metropolitan with "B" Series running gear. My mech recently worked on one of these prior to the owner (son of the father who had owned and stored it prior to his death) taking it out of storage and moving south with it. Neat car. With around only 30K on it, in excellent shape. Had a "real" floor mounted emergency/parking brake lever! Very cool! Had basically single carb. MGA 1486 in it, I believe. Don't recall the year but figure it was mid-50's car. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25989... MORE

I recently aquired a 78 1500cc midget that has been sitting for 8 years. I have been there before, so I am familiar with what I need to do to get this thing running again (flush & recondition tank, replace hoses, etc..) but I do have a couple of questions. 1. The car had been converted to a Webber DGV carb. Is this a better carb than the stock zeniths? Does it provide better performance or should I change it back. 2. Other than victoria british, is there a different company I should be looking to for parts, a... MORE

Guy Trust you, Mr Thrifty ; ) I'd never really though about that to be honest, I just wanted to replace t =3D=0D he rubber diaphragm with another new rubber diaphragm, cost wasn't an issue to be honest, not that I'm saying that 'it'll be done at all costs' just th =3D=0D at I wanted the seats as original as everything else. What I was unhappy about was the strip that goes round the SU fuel pump. =A31.70 for a strip of self adhesive that didn't even have the correct SU l og=3D=0D o on it, I did ring... MORE

I also ordered some parts for my fuel pump, which I'm putting back together =3D=0D , and decided to get the 'SU replacement part' tape to go round the middle of =3D=0D the pump holding the rubber sealing strip in position. Now, I was unhappy with this and it will go back. They haven't even got the =3D=0D correct SU logo on the strip, and even then, the circle has chunks knocked =3D=0D out of it. For a price of =A31.70 (2.55 USD) I thought it was a bit pricey, but f=3D=0D or it to be crap quality as... MORE

My guess would be "Yes", Bob... With ALCOHOL/water injection. Stock HC 1275's run only 8.8-1 and the Turbo Metros ran higher. They also had forged pistons but the stock Spridget piston while cast, is a pretty strong item as they take low pressure supercharging (with appropriate 100RON gasoline) without a problem. This would be up to 7psi. Intercooling makes a big difference but alcohol/water really "brings back" the leaded 100+RON octanes of yesterday. This stuff injected in appropriate amounts really cools down the combustion process. The Turbo Metro head uses the larger 1.4 intake valves I think. For more... MORE

Mike What kind of fuel delivery problems are you having? The correct size of the actual fuel pipe itself is 1/4 " diameter, so I wouldnt haave thought either of those two rubber hose pieces would cause a problem. It's more likely to be something else, perhaps something blocking, or fuel pump not working correctly or dirt in the carbs, dirty fuel filter etc. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 25812... MORE

The Morris minor engine will bolt straight in and sit on the original mountings as log as you still have them! However there are some minor (?) differences, but very few of these will prevent the car form driving. You will have to fit an electric fuel pump as the original 948 had an AC mechanical pump driven from the crank shaft, the Morris minor had an SU electric pump, and so the block will not have the hole in the side to fit the mechanical pump. The minor engine will be one of three sizes. 803cc in which... MORE

MG Metros had 10.5:1, I think until the advent of unleaded, even various non-MG versions had 9.4 or 9.75:1. Regards David "David Jacobs" 25773... MORE

Chris I's probably not worth swapping engines. I would put a Weber DGV on the 1500 and enjoy. If you really want to work on the car you can put a double row timing chain, new thrust washer, a rocker oiler and you can fit 1275 cam bearings to a 1500. A lot less work than swapping engines. and a perfectly respectable engine. And you could recover part of the cost by selling the 1275. I take a lot of crap from the MG orthodoxy, but I race my '76 1500 "Spitget", No major failures yet, knock on wood.... MORE

Hi, Bree... More specific information would be required in each case for accurate answers, Bree. With respect to the brakes... are you making an assumption, here? Air just does not get into the brake system "automatically" or "overnight"...unless you've suddenly developed a hydraulic leak wherein air displaces fluid which has leaked out or you have suddenly developed a master cylinder or other mechanical problem(s) within the system. Otherwise, besides low brake fluid (when was the last time this was topped off?), worn brake pads are most likely the first place I'd look with a suddenly "soft" pedal (when was... MORE
