David... One other advantage of "burning it out" is a nice (steam) cleaning of the combustion chamber. Of course, if it really runs badly a draining procedure (per David) is definitely in the cards. I steam the combustion chambers out ea. spring via the carbs and an old Windex bottle filled with distilled water. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30564... MORE
Mark... Running rough can mean anything, so not really enough to go on. Usually an engine which runs "rough" under load is either overadvanced in terms of ignition or suffering from an ignition system which requires attention in that the spark is breaking down under load. This could be a bad coil, wires, cap or any other individual component not quite up to snuff. It could also be a combination of worn items, as well. Lastly, there is the fuel supply. Float levels set too low, inadequate pressure (old or bad pump) or inadequate supply (clogged filter, line or... MORE
Hello, Is Spridgetless even a word? Well, I guess it is now! A long time ago I left this list, but now I'm back. I used to have a '69 Midget, but since then I've moved all over the country, and have finally settled in Western Washington, USA. The Midget kind of had to go along the way, which I regret to this day, but sometimes we have no choice in these matters. So, now I'm looking for another little rusty British demon to tinker with. I'm hoping that this time the cars will be in better shape, since... MORE
Rick Grats on your new acquisition, don't take any notice of some of the list 'snobs' there's nothing at all wrong with a 1500 - they're great little cars (apart from the Triumph engine which is a dog) And good luck with it ....not saying any more on that ;) Braided cable - not sure - could be a ground, could be the handbrake cable? Pull cable is the bonnet release. The throttle pedal is available from Moss (well here it is - UK). Not sure what a dashpad is, do you mean the crash roll on top of... MORE
Listers - (sounds like something you call people after a night on a booze cruise) I finally got my car home, created a folder in the photo section ("Ricks 75") and uploaded a photo... Figured out what caused the PO from finishing the restoration, he had snapped 2 bolts off while removing the passenger side front shock for some reason, soaking in WD40 for a couple of days and small amount of heat and the stubs came right out. The car is in supprisingly good shape (for Wisconsin), the previous owner towed it up from New Mexico, so it... MORE
Thanks for your help guys. Yeah I've been through the electrical problems, carburetor problems, etc., etc. with this car. But I have a high-stress job and don't live very far from work, and nothing feels better after a rough day at work than a slow drive home with the top down in the old '76 Midget. Guy, Great stuff. Thanks for your time. I will definitely check into all these matters. FYI-the carbs are separated and the linkage in pieces. Rob C Webfoot Leisure.com rob@... 630-841-6077 robbiesg@... 30223... MORE
David, Did you remember to open the throttle to full during the test. It seems to make it more accurate if you do. Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 30217... MORE
Robbie, I think the start point is to loosen the little pinch bolts on the throttle and the choke connecting rods, so that the two carbs can move independently. Then check that the piston in each will lift and drop back down again cleanly, without catching or sticking. If not, then loosening and re-tightening the two screws that hold the piston chamber on may help to centre it. More likely you will need to centre the jets. There is a special tool but it realy isnt necessary. Just loosen the larger (upper) nut on the jet by a half... MORE
G'day TJ Remove the float bowl lids and, with a compressed air gun, blow the sludge out of the sump at the bottom of the bowls. Remove the carby dashpost and blow air into the bottom of the float bowl to ensure the fuel supply jet to the carby is clear. We had a car in the shop recently with a similar problem - idled fine but wouldn't go up a hill. Plenty of fuel in the float bowl, but the fuel supply jet was 90% blocked and nothing was getting to the carby. And if the car has... MORE
Cap'n, Thanks for the quick response. I kept both carbs separate and the pieces together thank JA. Will investigate the centering tool and re-clean relevant parts. Webfoot Leisure.com rob@... 630-841-6077 robbiesg@... 30173... MORE
Esteemed Listers, It will be sunny and in the 50's in Chicagoland this weekend and it's time to get serious about McGee the Midget again. I have cleaned and beautified my first SU and re-assembled. Much to my disgust the throttle link/jet assembly is very sticky. This is my first crack at messing with SU's as the car came with the ZS 150. My only thought is that the needle may be sticking and/or bent. Would appreciate any input from those more familiar with SU's than I. Hints as to what to replace on a rebuild also appreciated. Don't... MORE
Rob C. "Stickyness" IS usually the sign of a jet (or slightly bent needle) not exactly centered. SU makes a "Tuning Tool Set" ($15?) which has a jet centering tool which will line this little critter up perfectly. If this doesn't free things up, most likely a slightly bent needle, then. It is important to keep the same suction valve with the same suction chamber. I am told these are "matched" at the factory. There should be no sticking between valve and chamber when these parts are clean of all varnish/fuel deposit which may have accumulated over use/time. Cap'n.... MORE
Cap'n Bob- What leads me to believe I have an issue as to fuel flow is that my car is acting very simmilar to the motorcycles I race when I have had fuel flow issues (pinched fuel line, clogged filter, even started a race once time with the fuel petcock 1/2 way on). It's like it runs peachy in lower RPM's and if I gas it, it runs fine in the upper range too, for about 5-10 seconds, until the float bowls are depleated. At this point, it runs like crap even at low RPM's until float bowls fill... MORE
I have a 73, and a 74. They had only sat for about a year each, however I did have a 62 that the previous owner had run since 1987 and then only for a couple of months, almost 22 years total except for that short period . . . There are things you can count on fixing and replacing when they sit that long . On the 73 I disconnected the fuel line from the float bowls, stuck it in a jar and turned on the key to activate the fuel pump to see how the fuel was... MORE
An added thought. When using compressed air through the fuel lines also be sure and not blow it back into the carburetor bowls. What year is it and if it was stored before you bought it how long was it sitting not running? Don "Don May" 30138... MORE
The weather report predicts rain for the next five days. I briefly contemplate slashing my wrists then figure going to the shop and sorting nuts and bolts is a better alternative. That done worked up my resolve to repair and clean the bugeye/73RWA project seats before I spray them with black vinyl dye. Unbolted them and took them into my wee shop where I get high on Acetone, Tetrahydrofuran, Diethyl Hexyl Phthalate, Methanol, Toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Propylene Glycol, Monomethyl Ether Acetate, Ethyl Acetate and Xylene. The labels on the Vinyl Sealant and Lacquer Thinner cans informs me "Reports... MORE
Hi Dan, Sounds like you are making good progress on car. My 62 Sprite is also in multiple pieces and is an ongoing project. Haven't got to the engine yet this time but I have completely rebuilt it many years back. All of the hardware was standard American threads except my SU's that have Whitworth. I am curious as to what you were referring to when you said "I did the rear main modification to it (the one using JB Weld)." That's a new one to me. My current activity is sorting hardware as I just bought replacements nuts... MORE
Hi, My gas pedal often sticks (does not return all the way back). I can usually fix it by tapping it a bit but sometimes I have to quickly hook it with my shoe to get the revs back down to idle speed. I have determined that this problem is caused by corrosion on the floor hinge rather than a problem with the throttle springs, cable or the bent rod between the cable and the pedal. I have improved the pedal's action somewhat by applying oil and wd40 to the hinge and by excersizing the pedal to try and... MORE
Hey group. I think its time to pass my beloved 62 midget onto someone else. But only after Don May gets first refusal!... I'm not in a panic to move it, but i would like to see it go to a good home. Its photos are in the album section under 62 midget... its an original 948 side curtain model with a very new (under two weeks) rebuilt head. it has very nice seats, good dash, everything works, including the windshiled squirters. the hand brake needs adjustment and it could do with a brake bleeding or the very least... In my junkyard explorations today I came across an Austin car that I had never seen before. It was rear drive hardtop coupe, had a 948 in the cab with a single downdraft carb. Drum brakes all round, most of the markings and nameplates were missing. It looked like an Austin Amercia or Morris 1100, but was rear drive. (c. 1964?) It had a faded rear deck lid that appeared to be A40. I was interested in the rear ratio.... hmmmm? "riley_datsun" 29772... MORE
Nigel, I am very afraid to post any pix you could see. The car is in three colors of paint plus the original Brookland green. (Seeing what looked best, ya know). I have lowered the front with 1275 springs but not the rear just yet. I'm running American Racing Mags 5.5 inches with 165 x 70 tires. I've cut off the front bumper supports and sold off the rubber bumpers. The interior is new and pretty well sorted out. McGee runs and drives well except for my often mentioned clutch problem. I will be pulling the engine this spring... MORE
OK, for those (several) who said they are/might be interested, or "grab them anyway", I will do just that and then get back in touch when I know what Mr Rust the scrapman, charges me for them. I'll let you know and then you can decide if you are still interested. I will get carbs, linkeage and manifold. Exhaust manifold as well?? I am in the UK, Lake District Guy "Guy Weller" 29333... MORE
