James... Could not agree more with your take on "properly" going unleaded with respect to cylinder head, etc. I noted you were using "regular unleaded" before switching over to Shell Optimax. As I am in the USA we may be using the same words but with different meanings.... ...do I understand you to mean "regular" (as in low-octane unleaded) or "regular unleaded" as in "normally available at the corner pump" unleaded "hi-test" (aka "premium"). I think your gasoline is shown in RON at the pump "over there" while we utilize PON "over here". But adding about 3 numbers to... MORE

I don't think so, Tom. Considering what you paid, if it's in the decent mechanical shape claimed, I think you did OK for what you paid, personally. I owned a de-smogged '72 until a certain girl ran a Stop sign one night and her insurance co. put me into a new Fiat 1/9. Pull the head and shave it to bring the Comp. Ratio up to no more than 9.5-1, (mine was 10-1 but we had "manly" gas available at that time!:) and purchase a set of 1.75 HS4's suitably calibrated as in Stage 1 of the Special Tuning... MORE

Ken, When you are measuring the end float on the cam are you doing it with the cam drive gear torque to spec? Without the gear in place, yes you will have plenty of end float. The cam drive gear pulls the cam forward towards the triangular plate. Hi all, I picked up a 1275 (73 Midget) engine for my Morris Minor project car. Since it arrived in four boxes a few parts were missing (so I've discovered) One of these was the small triangular(ish) drive flange which connects the camshaft to the oil pump. A new oil pump and flange were obtained (along with loads of other stuff for a complete rebuild). After assembling the oil pump, camshaft and the triangular camshaft retaining plate I find I have about 1/8" or so of endfloat where the spec is 4 to 7 thou! The retaining plate is... MORE

Are you checking the end float with the camshaft gear in place and tight? There won't be anything on the oil pump end to keep it in place and a spacer in there isn't a very good idea. Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 31129... MORE

Hello people. I just got my '79 midget working!! yey yey wahoooooo, You cannot believ how happy i am My girlfriend is comming down in a week so will be able to drive her around in it!! had a few last minute slip ups but its all good now. Went for a little drive! no TAX or insurance at the mo so couldn't go far! Oh an guess what the problem was... the reason it sounded like a dog when it started. My stepdad had blocked the jet on No2 carb when he 'fixed' it! Anyway no harm done.... MORE

Nope, don't think I have any extra's. My book and engine says that you should look for the carbs & intake manifold from a 65-66 MGB & GT. They & I am running a pair of HS4's and if you cut the manifold (the 65-66 MGB... is A 1798 CC) and slide it together, mine has piece of hose and two hose clamps in the middle, it works just great and you don't notice any thing out of line. If you get the manifold, you can use any pair of HS4's. Bolts are / \ or vise versa. Get... MORE

Hi Ben If I was you I would try to buy a part restored 1500 that somebody has given up on. It's amazing how much people spend on the mechanics, blinkered to the fact that the shell is totally rotten. We did the same with an MGB when the engine blew. As well as a recon engine and new carbs we also got a set of wires, overdrive box, new brakes, a good interior, a silent back axle, 2 new tyres and a webasto roof! Not bad for =A3300 Take whatever you need from the donor car and then sell... MORE

hi people, just want some advice, the engine on my 1500 has just given-up! i need a car as a daily driver- must also beavble to make long trips of 300 =3D=0D miles plus easily if i buy a new engine, ehanust system, magnetronic ignition, oil cooler, ke =3D=0D nlowe fan, overhaul carbs, do you think a 1500 midget will be up to this? I have spent loads on the car so far and i don't wanna spend =A31500plus a nd=3D=0D have to buy another car 6months down the line. So spent money on the Midget or get some... MORE

Hi I have changed to a manual choke in my 1500 Midget I was curious to see where most of you have mounted your choke cable. In the dash is not an option, I wnat to keep it reversable. and I was hoping not to have to put a hole in any interior panels , but that may be the best place, on passenger side? Thanks Mike. Hi, Rich.... The emissions "tubes" on the later carbs. are in and of themselves, "graduated orifices" and thus, no PCV valve is required in the "line" between flame arrester and carb(s). :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30813... MORE

Hi Kevin Welcome to the group. This group is for all 'Spridgets' and many here are Frog owners, but you may like to try the other group specifically for Frogs - http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/bugeye/ Yeah I don't know why those nutty Americans call them Bugeye's either ;) You may also want to check out Terry Horler's excellent book - Original Sprite and Midget, published by Bay View Books, ISBN 1-870979-45-1 This book has an excellent restorers section on Frogeyes and many of your answers will be found there. I'm not an expert on Frog's - there's many here you know a... MORE

Hi there, Just signed up to this site. Last year got myself a '59 frogeye for a groundup restoration (definately not a runner!!). I think it spent its initial life in sunny Houston Texas before being repatriated to uk. It then apparently stood sometime before I got my hands on it. Anyway thats the history lesson. Taking it steady with the bodywork last year but getting there slowly (taught myself to TIG weld - a very neat way to weld!). I am spending time on indoor work because UK garages in the winter aren't fun - and I'm getting... MORE

Yes, that is a tricky job. The 1/2" open end is what you need but be careful because of lack of space down there you can only turn it a couple flats at a time. Getting the nut back on...................... Well that's the real challenge. If you are doing it for the first time be prepared to spend some time getting it right. It took me a few times walking away and taking a break from it. You need hands that are not too large and get one had down there, one on each side, with your fingers on... MORE

Mark, Mine wasn't a new pump, at least it was about 5 years old. I found out by swapping parts out., after I had checked all of the carb settings etc. When I changed the pump the problem was cured. Since the old pump still seemed to push fuel through I got inquisitive and dismantled it to see how it worked, Sure enough, there was a short tear in the diaphragm. Bit like someone with a fault heart valve, it pumped well enough until it was asked to run uphill. Guy "Guy Weller" 30592... MORE

Mark, I see that you gave it a new fuel pump but it does sound like the exact same symptoms I got on my 1500 when the diaphragm in the fuel pump was split. It appeared to pump normally, but on full throttle inclines it would go fine for a few hundred yards and then begin to miss and splutter untill I backed off a bit. Guy "Guy Weller" 30589... MORE

So Chris, are you saying when troubleshooting a problem such as this never assume just because it is new it is ok? I am more likely to look at something I have not explored yet (i.e float bowl sediment) and if still unresolved will go back and recheck previous work and parts. But your point is well taken. I did not think the fuel pump or filter as likely since I could drive on flat and slight grades, and normal acceleration with no issues. but will leave no stone unturned. I am also not familar with the su carbs,... MORE

I've also recently had no end of problems with new electrical items failing after only about a weeks service, coils, plug leads, dizzy caps, rotor arms condensors etc across a whole range of classic cars Regards Chris Valentine Dunlop Motorsport David, Capn Bob also suggested the same things, the only area I have not looked at since I got this midget is float bowls. I change the fuel pump six months ago and the fuel filter one month back. I know the issues with getting the correct fuel pump, mine came from moss motors for a midget. Checking the... MORE

Hi Guys, Been watching this site for some time. Many of you seem to be quite the expert on midgets. I have just tuned my 68 midget, runs great around town but on a steep uphill climb, experience a loss of power and engine runs rough for about a minute before I can continue. If there is still more hill it will bogg down and repeat until reach the top. Could this have something to do with the SU carbs? Obviously, I am a novice at this but am willing to learn. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Mark 68... MORE
