Dear Listers, Is it just me or does the list seem to have collectively caught cabin fever? It may be terminal. Cap'n Bob-just saw a video clip online you must never see or hear about. Terry, On the several that I have dismantled, they have all had mastic between bezel and glass, O-ring between glass and the next ring in, and an 0-ring between the case and the metal dashboard. I don't think there is supposed to be an O-ring behind the metal reflector ring. It is stepped and fits against the rim of the case, leaving a gap between it and the dial face to let the light through. One tip here is that you should save discarded O rings from the rear hubs as these will fit around the tach and speedo... MORE
To fix this you are going to have to open up the case and get into the detailed workings. It is pretty delicate stuff in there and parts do wear out. You may prefer to get it to a specialist to recondition. If you do want to sort it yourself you will need to remove the chrome bezel and glass and then undo the two screws on the back of the case. Remove the mechanism complete. It does come out, but may seem like it won't, especially if it has a trip mileometer fitted. Inside, resist the temptation to... MORE
I was thinking in terms of the dyno for correct needle selection, and correct setting of the distributor. Although not totally ignorant, I do not have the experience to set up either properly myself. (there goes the perfectionist again!) I also liked the sound of those rimflo valves, which, together with a few simple head mods, can bring even more of the 'fun factor'. Reading that book has suddenly given me a far greater understanding of why what I discovered over the years was working, actually works. Not only that, I can see how to improve on it. The... MORE
I'll leet Nigel answer this one Cap'n but .... If you are talking about the plate I think you are, then according to what I have seen, and backed up by Horler, the plate was rectangular on all cars up to the 1275, at which point it became oval. I am sure that I will now be corrected as I am probably wrong! On another subject, I took the Cap'n's advice and bought the book on engines by Vizard. A fascinating read. I will be undertaking some of those mods. My aim is to look original on the outside... MORE
Hi, Roger.. We do have a lister who has done the Vizard carb (and I believe intake manifold) mods to the stock 1.25SU's. I hope we hear from him. Supposedly with these street mods, the 1.25 set-up will match the flow rate of a stock pair of 1.5's. The foregoing notwithstanding, Vizard improvements are flow bench tested/verified. Today, David is semi- retired working on "improving" American V-8's!! (and did objective testing as well on Oil Extreme...like Grassroots, good results!:). Following Vizard's engine building advice (though substituting a 45DCOE with 38mm throats) I spec'd. a "fast road" 1340 for my... MORE
"VIN Plate" Thank you, Nigel, Roger, etc.! I've never seen an oval one and on my PO'd '74 it was a long rect. plate up by the left corner of the windshield inside the car. OK..."normal"....rect. plate in the engine compartment mounted on a "frame rail" beneath the rear carb. :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 28907... MORE
My cuz in Irving called me this morning. He is having trouble with his 97 F150 6 cylinder 300CID....it is underheating. It will barely move the needle off cool, and after a while, gets even cooler! I suggested the thermostat, unchanged in 140,000 miles might be stuck open...but would it get more open (opener?) as the engine warmed up? What is normal? Any suggestions besides change the thermostat? Robert Houston COP QUOTES "Someone, somewhere is practicing. If you're not, and someday, if you should meet, you will lose." Hi folks! I have just purchased a 1977 MG Midget 1500 in what I can only describe as 'tired' condition. Although it has an MOT it does have a few faults, and as I am not in the least bit mechanically minded I need some advice as to what repair is required. There is a water leak coming from the engine in quite a steady stream from somewhere at the top of the engine below the head: it is a bit difficult to see exactly where as it is obscured by the manifold and carbs. The water temperature gauge on... Having just broke two propshafts on a test rig and having to do full risk assesment on the items I can say that..... If you completely dissasmble the propshaft then make sure you mark it up and reassemble everything in the same orientation. Most important is that two pins on the Hookes Joints at each end of the shaft are exactly in the same plane. Because of the spline teeth in the sliding part there is only one possible to way to assemble this correctly. (possibly 180 degrees out, but only if the spline has an even Nr of... MORE
Hi Vince Welcome to the list amd congrats on the work on the Sprite. I can't help you with the dizzy, others can. Regarding the Carbs, have they been rebuilt? Serviced? Twin HS2's are notoriously tricky to get right, even more so if the condition of them is 'unknown'. The first job if you havent done so already is to determine the 'condition' of them and see if any parts are worn, because if they are you'll never get them tuned correctly. Well... With no intent to be a wise-guy, ass-u-me(ing) it's all mechanically in decent shape...what's the problem? The timing specs are in the book whether it's the Cooper S mech. dizzy or the later vac. one, right? So are the carb. set-up directions. You MAY need an SU carb jet centering tool (much better than using the carb. needle shank) and a portable hand held tach so as to positively "see" that slight momentary rise in rpm as you lift the air valve 1/8" or so off the jet bridge and a Unisyn (or the like) to positively "see"... David... A flat spot (most especially with a VP3 Kent 276+ cam) is not unusual with a 45DCOE using the larger 4.5 or 5.0 aux venturi. You will notice this carb configured for racing uses the smaller 3.5 aux vent which brings the main system "in" a little earlier in the game. Was using 1.4+ intake valves and a VP3 cam. Noticing this, I changed out my 4.5's for 3.5's and jetted upwards accordingly to 145 mains and 175 air correctors while retaining the 50F9 idle jets the carb came with. (Then I rechecked the ign. timing to make... MORE
Don... Is the '73 vac. cannister supposed to be ported to a carb or ported to the intake manifold? 'Cause if it's not the original dizzy and it's a mix and match set-up and you get it the wrong way round, the symptoms you got would be the symptoms you'd get. Cap'n. Some days it's a second brain rather than an extra hand you need. I've had trouble tuning the 73. I adjusted the timing over and over, tweaked the carbs too many times to count, would get it to idle smooth while sitting and run ok at higher revs but the moment I took it out on the street under load any attempt to accelerate past a fast idle it would hesitate, pop and so on and I would limp home at about fast idle rpm. I disconnected the vacuum advance hose, plugged it up, then took it out and... MORE

SCRAPPERS NEEDED! We are now making the Seventh series of Scrapheap Challenge and are recruiting contestants to take part. Scrapheap Challenge is a popular engineering show where two teams of mechanically minded people have just ten hours to build and race contraption. In previous years these challenges have included snowmobiles, monster trucks and monowheels, jet racers amongst many others. The last series was transmitted on Channel 4 and attracted an average audience of over three million. The series is structured as a knockout competition with the winning team taking home the prestigious `Scrapheap trophy'. Team should consist of three... MORE

OK Gingerino...here we go.... The amount of choke (in terms of manual cable/jet travel) that is required to... 1. get the engine to "fire" to begin with 2. allow it to continue running smoothly (decreasing amount) as it warms up to normal operating temperature. Fr'instance: On 40-45F+ mornings, no choke is really needed at all. A couple of turns of the motor with the starter button is all it takes. We let the oil pressure come up and fast idle it for a minute or so (1200-1500rpm) using our right foot, then drive it gently 'til it comes up... MORE
