I plan to throw out my mechanical fuel pump on my 62 948 engine and replace it with an electronic pump. This pump model on e-bay ( http://tinyurl.com/2l72d ) has been there a number of times but I wonder if it would be a satisfactory substitute for the SU solid state version. Any thoughts? I figure I'd worry about getting mounting brackets later. Nelson "witstock7" 31861... MORE

I can say one thing.. one DCOE on a 1500 is not much point. You should use two!. Second thing, don't bother with the choke on them unless you are firing up in artic conditions all it will do is flood the engine. Last thing don't bother with anything bigger than a 40 DCOE, 45's and 48's are all well and good but all they will achieve is more fuel use and no extra performance. Stewart "Ford Prefect" 31849... I've been thinking about installing a DCOE onto my 1500 Midget, and they say you need to convert to fully mechanical advance. I've looked at replacing with the Mallory Unilite distributor, but it's a bit expensive. Has anyone done a DCOE install and just recurved the original distributor? Or does anyone have more information on recurving one of these distributors? any help would be greatly appreciated. '79 MG Midget Chris "Chris" 31846... MORE

The cloud of smoke problem is gone and we think we have found the cause or at what we did has worked. We decided to have a look at the carbs adjustment and found that the front carb was way out, it was adjusted far too rich and it didnt work properly when pulling the choke- the jet didnt drop. So we adjusted and fine tuned both the carbs and the smoke seem to have dissapeared. But i cant figure out why the carbs should be the cause of such a cloud of smoke at just that point when... MORE

Stewart, Thanks for the ideas, that's the sort of easy stuff I was hopeing for. I'll try the duct tape choke and check for piston movement and report back. "cfisher1a" 31775... MORE

Hi, Curt... Pure race Huffaker carbs are modified to be "fixed" rather than "variable" venturi...IOW, the air valves are held fully open and machined to form the top of the venturi (or "fixed choke"..which is not to be confused with "choking" for mixture enrichment when cold). So, the butterfly works but not the air valve. Thus, to start "cold", you need to cut off part of the air supply to artificially enrichen the mixture. The fellow lister who mentioned the "duct tape" is "the man"!! Huffaker's pure race engine is usually fitted with "crankfire" ignition. Whether the advance is... MORE

This might sound is bit odd.. try taping over 3/4 ish of both ram pipe intakes with gaffer (duct) tape. you might need to cover more than 3/4. This should do the same as the choke, once it is running and has gotten a bit warm you should be able to take it off One other thing, are the pistons in the carbs moving? this can sometimes cause similar to what you are experiencing Stewart "Ford Prefect" 31770... I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running. I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era. Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1 at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. No choke, just ram air intakes modifed hs2 carbs. Had it to a local brit car guru last fall and he tuned the carbs and set it up... MORE

Hi guys! I need some help here. I have a problem with my newly installed 1275 engine, what happens is that when the car is warming up with the choke out everything is normal - just the normal amount of smoke from the exhaust. But when the engine is getting warmer and the choke is pushed gradualy back it starts smoking clouds og grey smoke especially when i give it throttle, it only lasts for a short while then its back to normal. Could this be condensation causing it? Cheers Jens Jens P. Maudal jens.maudal@... Greetings from "BottomsUp Brewery"... MORE

Neil... As far as I know... Del's utilize a diaphragm operated accelerator pump circuit which is more easily "tuned/adjusted" for a particular "tuned" application then is the DCOE's mechanically actuated system. In this respect, the Del would be more "user friendly" for the street. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 31736... MORE

....in which case, it is unlikely you'll be dealing with a single ZS carb, which Ryan is talking about. "David Jacobs" 31726... MORE

Hi Ryan The heat shields are available new, I've just bought one for my car from my local MG spares supplier, Beech Hill garage! It's a pain to fit though, a real juggling act with the carbs.....why oh why are the carbs held on with nuts and bolts rather than having studs like an A series! Also it could be the petrol ageing the diaphragm, make you sure you buy top quality ones from a good supplier like Moss. I had three fuel Pumps go on my Beetle (bloody thing!) in 18 months due to this. James "James" 31721... MORE

Ryan Yes. There is a good chance that is why the diaphram is failing, due to the heat buildup around the carb. I would definatly try to pick one up and install it. A good chance that will solve your problem. Not available new so keep your eye on ebay for one. Mike mk2sprite@... 31720... MORE

Ryan That's great news. That is a really simple fix. They just usually wear out from age, dry rot. Did you replace it when you did the rebuild? If so, do you have the carb heat sheild in place? Good luck Mike mk2sprite@... 31718... MORE

That was it, you were right, the rubber carb diaphram is riddled with slices, six in all, that bicycle-spoke out from the center. I hadn't wanted to check that at first since i just rebuilt the carb less than 8 months and 1000miles ago. Now to order a replacement and figure out what ate the thing up so fast. Ryan '76 "ryanmill1" 31717... MORE

Ryan Oh how I know how you feel... Check the oil in the dashpot, inside cap oh top of carb. Then remove the cover and check the rubber diaphram for any holes or tears. Either of these may cause the problem you are having. For now check the easy/obvious stuff first. Mike mk2sprite@... 31710... MORE

This car is both my love and my worst enemy. '76 Midget, single ZS All cylinders firing, all new plugs this afternoon. She idles fine and smooth, but as soon as i hit the road she revs fine UNTIL about 2800rpm, same spot every time, the rev nearly stops. No matter how far i push the accelerator, it takes nearly 30 seconds to rev from 2800 to 3200, and that makes for a lousey drive. The manual choke is wide open. It looks to be getting enough fuel in that the fuel filter and the screen in the fuel... MORE

Hi all, What a day today was!! 120plus miles in bright Cornish sunshine! Cannot wait untill tomorrow! She is running like a dream carbs are a bit lean but gogin to sort that out tomorrow!! I really do Love these little cars! I filled her up with optimax she seems to be running well One problem is that the ignition light is glowing (only very slightly) when i am gogin slowly!! fan belt seems not to be slipping! alternator on the way out maybe?? my 79 1500 was smelling like gas badly. Noticed the water controlled choke was basicaly hanging by one screw. So, like a fool, I disasembled the choke while I was in there, just to see if everything was ok. Now the stupid part: I'm not sure if I lost it, or if it was never there, but there's no heat mass. Now my question is, it's nice and warm here in NH now, being spring and all; Do I even need a choke, or can I just seal off the holes in the carb? and how hard is it... MORE

James, You are right, mustangs are nice cars (I had a '67), but there is something different about driving a midget. Guess there's one short way to explain it.... I used to fly off aircraft carriers, and sitting in the cockpit of a midget is the closest thing to being in a jet on the ground. Just wish I had an afterburner strapped on...or at least overdrive! Cheers, Pete "Pete Skalski" 31547... MORE

A common mod is to replace the locally operated valve (ie one with the hand wheel attached on top) with a remotely operated one which are much more commonly available. The advantage of this is that you can then buy a control cable (either a heater control from say an early mini or a choke control for a Spridget - I've used a rotary control from a B in my car) mount it in a suitable place in the car and you then can control the heat without having to get out and lift the bonnet (hood).
