I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and
race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running.
I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era.
Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1
at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race
gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. No choke,
just ram air intakes modifed hs2 carbs.
Had it to a local brit car guru last fall and he tuned the carbs and
set it up so it ran well and had lots of power... once it got
running. He commented on how very cold blooded it was. His suggestion
was to get some hotter range plugs to start and warm up the motor,
then switch back to the cold plugs to race. He set the idle to 3200
rpms because below that it would foul like mad. Had the motor out
over the winter to seal up oil leaks and now back in, but no change
to anything but some gaskets.
I've tried starting it the last couple days. On the first attempt it
started pretty well with a couple shots of either, and ran at 3,000
rpm but I had to shut it down after a few seconds because gas was
spraying out the vent hole in the rear float bowl cover. I think I
got the needle freed up so it wouldn't overflow. On later attempts
it just coughs a few times and quits, or runs for awhile at a very
low rpm, and won't respond to the throttle, till it just quits. I
assume flooded. Usually it won't fire at all without either. It's
fairly cool today, in the 50's which may not be helping. I have some
hotter heat range plugs on order. Do you think that will help
significantly? Anything else to try? I have spark when I pull the
plugs out, and I have gapped them down to .020". but no real change
in starting.Cranked it over in the dark and didn't seen any arcing
anywhere. Any other starting tricks? Any racers with similar
problems/solutions?
Thanks,
Curt
