Well, could be an old or weak fuel pump,
lack of a heat shield between carbs and
engine (it gets hot under there when not
moving at speed) causing fuel to percolate
or "vapour lock", or lack of a vented fuel
cap (though the latter is usually a case
of fuel starvation which shows up under
load..as in climbing a long hill with the foot well down).
So, number one, check for the heat shield
(basically a metal plate upon which the
throttle return springs are mounted in the
stock set-up). If it's "there"....go to...
...number two; at home run the car at idle
as though you were in heavy traffic so
as to simulate the symptoms you describe. When the symptoms appear, go
back and remove the fuel cap. If you
get a "whoosh" as you remove the fuel
cap, then you have a vacuum originating in the tank under those
conditions...go out and get the "correct" vented
fuel cap. Or, you might be able to "vent"
the one you have if it's got a rubber gasket....just cut half of it out
and try the
test, again. If it works..great! If not...get
a vented cap either locally or through any
of the ususal suspects...AH Spares

Thirdly, we have a suspected weak fuel
pump. These can be normally attended to
by opening it up (assuming a stock SU)
and dressing the points within the unit...
they build up oxidation in time. Or, you
can simply replace with a new SU (while
upgrading to their solid state or electronic
one) or replace with a LOW pressure Facet (square)or one of the other
solid state types such as sold at...
