Bruce,
Just completed an "as original as possible" rebuild onto a Heritage shell - 700 miles later and nothing has fallen off yet.
My original but tired 1275 was rebuilt by me - with the aim of extracting a few more HP and some extra torque 2500 - 6000 rpm.
My spec is
a.. 020" rebore (1293 cc)
b.. 9.75 :1 CR pistons
c.. MG Metro large valve cylinder head with mild port and polish
d.. MG Metro single HIF44 carb "Vizarded" (butterfly knife-edged, spindle trimmed and waisted, screws trimmed and Loctited, bridge lowered)
e.. Titan Motorsport inlet manifold, carefully port-matched (along with the gasket)
f.. cone K&N filter
g.. Kent MD266 cam
h.. Maniflow 1 5/8" LCB exh. manifold & pipe
i.. Maniflow single silencer
j.. Lumenition Magnetronic ignition (replaces points & condenser).
Still running in, but after 1k miles I will get it set up accurately on a rolling road. For the moment however its feeling good - plenty of torque where I want it, and generally feeling nippier and more responsive than standard. Apart from the carb it looks pretty standard - but sounds gorgeous - see early photos at http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/466045.
You can go further with the rebore, further with the CR, wilder with the cam and rockers. I chose my setup to make sure it didn't turn unpleasant to drive in traffic. If I was doing it again, I would think more carefully about how to achieve a higher CR - one of the best ways to squeeze (literally) more out of the motor.
Have fun.
