I have been reading this thread with interest. A lot of interesting ideas. Let me think a moment and apply my simple Polish logic. Before you go into motor....... you have marked crank pulley and it always stops in the same place. If you back it up, it stops a few degrees from the same place always? right? Then take it until it stops and check into plug holes and find if any pistons are at or very near TDC. If they are, there could be something in the cylinder that is hitting the piston. If non of them are at TDC, that means they all have traveled through TDC before the engine stop meaning that the piston is not hitting something in cylinder like a socket or a valve or a nut. If it does stop at TDC, take and back up the crank 180 degrees and look in the plug holes of the two pistons that are now at BDC. Insert a magnet tool and fish around and try to attract something loose. You may be able to hear it drop as you pull out the magnet. Also, you might try to put a broom stick next to the two pistons that stop at TDC and place your ear on it and roll the car until it stops and see if you can hear a mechanical "thunk" there or on some other place on the engine. (near crank ends or clutch.) The next easiest thing to do is pull the valve cover and just watch each valve move up and down to make sure they all move the same amount. Pay special attention to the valves of the two cylinders that are at TDC when the engine stops.
If it does not stop at TDC, it must be something in the bottom end on the crank, not the cam or cam gear or timing chain or the pushrods or valves. (2:1 reduction.) It could be rod hitting (you should be able to hear it "thunk", or is it possible that if a bolt on the flywheel/clutch outer edge is backed out it could be hitting something? It would help to get clutch working just to make sure it is not the tranny but I don't think the tranny could make it stop in the same place in two different gears. If you can push it hard enough to slide rear wheels, it must be making a "thunk or click" sound somewhere.
Does it just stop within a 1/2 degree like it hits a socket in a cylinder (therefore it should make a noise,) or does is slow down and come to a halt (like something in a bind) therefore no clunk sound?
I am waiting to find out what it is.
