I can't help just jumping in here. I am also from the Rat Fink generation of hot rodders. We used to solve our wheel problems (read no money for Mags) in the old days by taking the steel wheels to a guy who would cut out the centers and reverse them to get a wider stance and weld them back in. When we wanted wide wheels, he would do the reverse center trick and then cut the rim around on a lathe and add a ring of steel, what ever width we wanted to go. 1 inch, 1.5 inch 2 inches etc. As I recall, it did not cost very much at all and they looked cool. A little silver paint with a very thin bright red stripe out near the bead chrome lug nuts.....cool.
Cheers,
