That is what I was thinking.. Speedos are calibrated for a certain speed for a certain RPM of the input cable. The presence of 3 different pinions would support my theory that the speedo never changed when the diff ratio changed, they just altered the RPM of the input cable to suit. although I don;t know what the third pinion is for! "stock 1275...3.73....smoke the tires" Yes it will. Most especially when we team the foregoing with the slightly lower 1st gear of the Datsun 5 speed "whilst" (I like this word........it's got a.............. well.......certain "flavor" so to speak) we enjoy a more serene 70mph cruise in 5th. With the Cooper S cam advanced 4 degrees for Metro inlet timing, I gotta be careful of this in the rain. In 2nd as well (in the lower range after the clutch is in, yet). And this with 70 Series 175 T/A's yet. Cap'n Bob "Quick" :{) "Robert E. Shlafer" 37074... MORE

OK, Rob C. Belay the first paragraph of my previous post then. Now that I know the circumstances, I totally agree with your mech. in that you need to "vent" the crankcase, either to the airfilters (if possible) or to atmospher via a "breather" similiar to the one you can find at www.speedwellengineering.com under "performance, misc.". These breather cans are also available for more reasonable prices from Jeg's and/or Summit . Open up whatever vents you have on the valve cover and skip the charcoal cannister competely with respect to the motor. Now, because the fuel system is closed... MORE

Welcome back, Robert. Believe me, everybody here has been thinking about you and the family. Good to get back to work, if only to show others (like your grandchildren) that life must go on. Anyone know if stainless steel fuel tanks are still available for early Spridgets, mine is a MKIII Sprite 1966. I Know they were available a couple of years back but currently none of the usual suspects here in the UK seem to stick them. I think the Idea of a stainless tank is brilliant since there is mo possibility of corrosion crud building up on the inside and finding its way in to the carbs (ever) and no need to paint the outside. Thanks and best regards Dave "David Dixon" 36963... MORE

Hello, Well it's a sad day I have to sell my Sprite. Life and school don't seem to agree with my little English car. I have the dual master cylinder and am ordering the parts. I have the 65 Midget MKIII. Do I get the parts for the 948 or the 1098? The VIN is GAN3l 36873 if that helps. "Ginger" 36941... MORE

You've gotta love this one.A 1973 Midget that has been in storage for 20 years. One bid already for $500. The storage guys are now selling it, and some of their priceless gems include: 1) It runs but obviously will need a tune up. As it that's all it will need! 2) We did not drive the car and there is no fluid in the hydraulic clutch, but we were told the transmission, and brakes are OK. So please explain how you verified these bits were OK. 3) The only rust is where I am pointing in the photos,... MORE

Wanted to thank everyone for the advice I received on installing resleeved master and clutch cylinders and with the resulting leak of the master cylinder. Especially the suggestion for using the nylon washers on the master - worked like a charm. The two make an amazing difference in braking and clutch. rlirwn@... 36877... MORE

Rick, My V6 is a GM crate motor sold for replacement of the Chevy S10 2.8L V6. It is rated at 160 hp if the stock S10 2bbl intake and cast iron exhaust manifolds were bolted back on it. With my headers and Holley/Offy intake system, I would guess mines's up toward 190 or so, but I have no dyno data. This month I am planning to install a set of Crane roller rockers, so that sould push it up over 200hp. My traction sucks. The 185s I have don't hook up. The only time they did when I... MORE

Ahhhh, Spring is here and an old man's fancy turns to funny little British cars going round and round, real fast.(well, sorta real fast) Ever since I sold my Sprite (broke transmission, broke bank account) I have missed the little bugger, er...uh...little bloke? Does anyone know if speed channel will be carrying the Production G and Production H Races? Needa spridget fix. cheers, bill b. "w_burrell" 36808... MORE

The last sets of brake and clutch pedal pads I've bought have been really crappy, and fell apart within a few thousand miles. I know these have never been much good, but they seem worse lately. Are there some which are better than others? How do you know? Who sells good ones? "joe blxfstz" 36772... MORE

"It just might roll down the driveway" Geeze....BFD....like this is rocket science or something...yeh, right. It didn't roll yesterday when I set the "rollers" on my 1.5 set-up and hasn't in 42 years so I sorta doubt it, most especially since parking brakes and wheel chocks were "invented". Unless you got a clutch fan, do it my way and you won't need a chock anyway. Just leave it in neutr al and set the parking brake....OK!! If it makes you feel better, put a chock(s) under a wheel....or dead cat(s)! Now, take the damn plugs out so the engine... MORE

Or at least the MOT tester thinks it is, Took it for it's MOT this morning and it passed. It still has a high idle to sort out (the throttle spindles are a little stiff it would seem) Nad the clutch master cylindre would apear to need new seals still. For those that don't know the MOT is the yearly road worthyness test here in the UK the car can't be driven on public roads with out a currnet MOT certificate, unless you are driving to a pre-arranged MOT inspection. Stewart PS this is the first MOT it has... MORE

"Put the car in second...." Sure...this'll work also the same...but.... ....why all the exertion when turning the engine over with the fan while lo oking directly at the valve(s) seems so much easier & accurate as well??? 'Course, if you've a "clutch" fan, you're SOL and "bumping" is indeed in the cards! :):) Cap'n Bob '60 :{) "Robert E. Shlafer" 36747... MORE

I would suggest removing the air cleaners such that you can look down the carb throats and see the slides (we are talking SU's here, are we not?). Stick a finger in each and raise the slides up and look for the "frog". If you raise a slide up, then let it drop, it should lower smoothly and both slides should "sit" the same in the carb bores. Something may also be lodged in the throttle plate beyond the slide...something like...FOAM??? OK, spill it...foam? Come on...we need some entertainment... "Jim" 36662... MORE

As a temporary measure, you could get one of those aerials with a swivel/ball and socket at the base and turn the rod part 90 degrees from it's normal mounting position on a flat surface. It'll stick out a little from the side, but will fill the hole and do the aerial thing, till you find the proper type. David "David Jacobs" 36630... MORE

Listers - The enigine/trans is a 1963 all aluminum Buick V8, 215 ci. (I'm told the 4barrel carbed ones are high compression, something like 11 to 1 and are good for a stock 200hp) The trans is a Borg-Warner T-50, aluminum 5 speed, I think it's from a late 70's Chevy V8 Monza. The added frame rails are 2" square steel tube, not sure I needed that much added to the sides of the original frame rails (probably could have used a 1" x 2" on it's side) but boy did it ever stiffen up after they were installed.... Well, Dave.... The biggest/best change you can make is to bring up the compression ratio next time you have the head off, unless you're taking it apart for piston/ring replacement. Taking the head from 21cc down to 19cc should be good for just under 8.5-1 and were you to go to 8.8-1 pistons next time around, the combo would be good for between 9.0-9.3-1 or so. You could take the head down to 16.4cc but now you're down to min. thickness for the head (strength, cooling, head-gasket issues, etc.). Besides mechanical stuff, better breathing will help. Hey Paul Yesterday was the first time I was able to get my Sprite on the road since the 5 sp converison. All I can say Is SWEET. Milling the flywheel seem to let the motor rev faster. The Datsun 5 sp is great, the car seems to fly now. Was only able to go on my local back road, can not wait to get all the pieces put back on so I can Go for a real ride.
