Bill, There are at least 2 different sets of ribcase internal that are not interchangeable, so you your plan may not work. In some ways, re-assembling a trans is more tricky than an engine. You can make minor errors in an A-series engine and it will be forgiving about running anyway. Miss a couple details in the gearbox and you'll be locked in gear (or worse) again. I'm not saying you can't do it, but it requires more finesse and attention to detail. I'd say you'd be better off finding a already good one or having Paul A rebuild... MORE
Thanks for the suggestions. As several of you have stated, the new foam may not "collapse" quite like the old stuff. I am going to speak with an interior shop to see what they would do. With respect to a smaller steering wheel, I doubt that would help. It is my knees hitting the underside of the dash that is the problem, not the steering wheel (although a smaller wheel would really help with ingress and egress!!!!). Finally got around to restoring the seats. Got covers from England and components (webbing, foams, etc.) from M*ss. Everything went together nicely and the seats look great. Installed the driver's seat last night. Maybe I am used to the old worn out seat, but it seems I am really "high" (insert joke here...). The seats are very firm with almost no "give". From the bottom of the steering wheel to the top of the seat is five inches. I feel as though I am looking over the top of the windshield, rather than thru it. Is this all just... MORE
Hi Bill B, There are 2 4 speeds that you can use. One is the same size as the 5 speed and is found in all the years of the 210 and any of the B210 years with a 1400 engine. The other is a smaller one in configuration, but bolts and mounts exactly the same as the 5/4 speeds. It will be found in ANY of the B210, 1300, and 210 WITH a 1200 engine. This trans is wonderful. Even spacing on all the gears and shifts like glass. I have one in my van and love it.... MORE
The pickup was a 610, 74-82?, and was good for about 250,00 miles per transmission. I don't think it is on the list for transmissions for the conversion due to the long tailshaft. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 30888... MORE
Hi Bill, I'm unaware of a B210 PU ever being made. All B210 cars did NOT have the same trans, either, to the best of my knowledge. I know that the 78 B210 has the same transmission as the 79 210's. The Rover K series is a popular replacement and gives enormous power. Can be used with a Ford Sierra transmission or a Rocket box or the Caterham 6 speed. Frontline developments do all the bits you need. The K series is used in Land Rover Freelander, MG F, Caterham 7 as well as the small Rovers so bits are plentiful and it makes for a really quick midget. "graham2306" 30880... MORE

Bill, Fairly common fault. The selector fork wears and the result is that the 1st / 2nd gear moves a fraction too far along its splines and allows the spring loaded plungers to pop out, preventing the gear cluster from moving back as it should. Sorry, that is probably not too clear until you have dismantled the box to fix it! Cause is likely to be from "crawling" in first gear with your hand resting on the lever. Listers - My current project Midget (75) has no motor or trans, I'm searching for alternate powertrains to transplant into it, does anyone have photos, info or web sites they have run across on hot rodded Midgets they could pass along to me? Currently have a Ford 2.0 litre 4 cylinder with matching 4 speed, but looking at other options, plan on looking around for a 2.3L Ford 4 cyl with a five speed, which could be transplanted without too much hassle. Ford 2.3L turbo motor would be nice too, but don't want to spend a ton of cash,... MORE
Hi all I have just received an excellent Spridget catalogue from MOSS that not only lists all of their parts but is also a tuning guide as well. In there they recommend that for modern driving a 1500 would really benefit from a thermostatically controlled oil cooler, uprated relief spring and a supplementary rocker oil feed kit. This is apparently due to the Spitfire engine being mated to the "wrong gearbox" and subsequent over revving leading to the oil thinning and thus pressure dropping. James... Anything you can do to "cool" a motor which is otherwise running at a normal temperature extends service life. Yesterday's petroleum oils got by on viscosity more than film strength. Today they get by on both, more or less, while synthetics go more with film strength than viscosity for superior lubrication, inclusive of their ability to maintain superior film strength at higher operation temperature than the most modern of petroleums. Oil which is "overcooled" does not perform as well as oil running at "proper" temperature...thus the oilstat. However, one must monitor the oilstat for proper operation and thus,... MORE
I do not know the definitive answer to these questions for a frogeye, but - on my midget, which is pretty much the same as far as engine compartment painting is concerned, 1. left unpainted.2 ditto. 3 Painted. 4 Painted, except for starter nose inside clutch bell. 5. unpainted 6. unpainted 7. painted 8. Painted. water pump, painted. Cooling blades? Trevor- Thanks for the help. It's been so long since I took my car apart (ten LONG years) that I just didn't remember. Thought it was some type of duct tape.... I am installing a Datsun 5 speed with the kit from Paul Asgeirrson. Really a fabulous conversion. Everything well engineered and it all fits! Guess I'm just suprised when anything fits on these cars, or for that matter when I purchase something that's not junk. The tranny looks perfect for the car and the Datsun clutch set-up is really beautiful. What an improvement. I've got it all bolted... MORE

What's wrong with this picture? My brake light switch failed on my '71 Midget, so I ordered a replacment from Moss. I start to remove the old switch (the neck of the switch is threaded and mounted in a threaded hole in the clutch/brake pedal box) by attempting to rotate it out of its hole........to my surprise (I should not be, being a Midget owner!) it won't rotate because of lack of clearance! Am I crazy, or is this: 1. Just something on my car only, or 2. One of those loveable (hateful) design glitches that make owning one... MORE

Hi there, Just signed up to this site. Last year got myself a '59 frogeye for a groundup restoration (definately not a runner!!). I think it spent its initial life in sunny Houston Texas before being repatriated to uk. It then apparently stood sometime before I got my hands on it. Anyway thats the history lesson. Taking it steady with the bodywork last year but getting there slowly (taught myself to TIG weld - a very neat way to weld!). I am spending time on indoor work because UK garages in the winter aren't fun - and I'm getting... MORE

Listers - (sounds like something you call people after a night on a booze cruise) I finally got my car home, created a folder in the photo section ("Ricks 75") and uploaded a photo... Figured out what caused the PO from finishing the restoration, he had snapped 2 bolts off while removing the passenger side front shock for some reason, soaking in WD40 for a couple of days and small amount of heat and the stubs came right out.
