Steve Thanks for your reply. I have managed to unseize the slave cylinder, I'll see how it 'scrubs up' before deciding to reuse it. Regarding the windscreen, are you referring to putting the windscreen on the body - or actually getting the rubber seal into the frame itself? I've managed to get the seal into the frame after the tip from Brad - it worked ok, hard on the thumbs tho! I now need a source for a pillar seal, as I have a new one for one side, but not the other and Moss say its now NLA!... MORE

Cap'n I don't consider 65 bucks to be inexpensive - clearly your value of money is different to mine ;) But I do hear what you're saying. I did manage to un-seize it as it happens, perserverence pays off - sometimes! I'll clean it up and reassemble and then see how it looks - but from initial inspection it looks ok to be re-used. I'm doing that today. As no-one gave me a tip on what colour it was, I'll paint it the same as the gearbox housing. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 33042... MORE

Second that, buy a new one. The cost to PITA ratio here is to high to rebuild. I tried to respond to your question yesterday on fitting the seal for the windscreen from work, but I got bounced as the email address was not registered. What I did was place a piece of nylon mason's line under the windscreen then work it up against the seal pulling it into place. We tried other methods but this was the easiest, and did the least damage to the new paint. Steve Quandt "smquandt" 33039... MORE

Hi guys I've started on cleaning up the gearbox, and removed the clutch slave cylinder, which seems seized solid. Anyone got any ideas on how to 'unseize' it? Also what colour was the slave cylinder painted - same as gearbox body? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 33035... MORE

Welcome Paul I'm in Central London with a Frogeye. I will check your website as soon as i've written this. I used to know a guy who lived in St Neots named David Wilson. Ring any bells? Gary L 1958 Frogeye+Rivergate 5 speed London "Gary Lazarus" 33032... MORE

I used a plastic push stick, and a bondo spreader, to get it positioned, to sit flat enough to bolt the windscreen in place. You will also need about 3 mates to stand in the cockpit and hold the screen down, once you get the seal where it needs to sit. Brad "" 33015... MORE

Guys - Currently working on a Buick 215 powered MG midget, always loved the looks of the spoked wheels on British sports cars, but how long will they hold up to a small V8 and manual trans? A friend has offered me a set of wire wheels which he says are from a Triumph or maybe a MGB, (I think they are 14", but how do you tell what they are from, and what splines I will need?) I haven't seen them for a couple of years, hope to get them home this weekend. Was wondering if it'd be... MORE

Hi All. Well, we replaced the Master cylinder AND the slave cylinder, got the clutch bled and viola! ....the car ran like a well oiled top:) I had so much fun running around in it for 2 days...right up until I met with the local British Automotive club for a run...and it died on me in a parking lot. Damn! The fuel pump went out. We bought a new fuel pump today and I'll be up and running again in no time. The GOOD news, is that pretty soon I'll have replaced every part in the car and it... MORE

Lisanne... Your hubby is a mechanic, right? Tell him these cars are really a PITA when it comes to bleeding air out of their hydraulic clutch systems. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 32951... MORE

There is more than one 3rd gear fr the Ribcas trans. It could be 22G148 or 22G236 or 22G1121. If you're trying to replace it with new or similar used, look for the part number on it. Would be either stamped or acid written on it. For a clue for the number of it, what is the laygear part number? Again, there are 3 different ones! Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32954... MORE

It is simple, just stay on the gas and shift at red line..no problem. Cheers Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 32950... MORE

Lisanne, these clutches are notoriously difficult to bleed. You do need to be absolutely sure that you have really managed to get the air out of the system before simply assuming that either the master or the slave cylinder is faulty. There are a variety of tecniques which help in getting all of the air out It would be a waste of money to replace master and slave if in fact they were not faulty! Guy "Guy Weller" 32939... MORE

Non-engagement is the issue here, Mike. We were able to get some compression after we replaced the Master Cylinder, but not really enough to make the clutch work properly. It looks like we're going to try a new slave cylinder next...hopefully this will work. Ahhhh well...it looks like it's going to rain anyway:( (sigh) Lisanne:) "mckenzienewfs" 32935... MORE

Lisanne, Are you saying that the clutch will not disengage due to lack of hydraulic force/pressure or that it is permenatly disengaged. Duncan HHHhhhhh! Non-engagement is the issue here, Mike. Well it's official. I'm a frustrated MG owner! I've had "Chloe' for almost two months and haven't really driven her yet. First, we fixed the brakes...then I went to drive her and she wouldn't start...cleaned the carb and adjusted it...hubby drove her out to test her and the clutch went out...pulled the clutch slave cylinder and bought a kit to fix it...still had clutch issue. Bought a new master cylinder today...STILL didn't work. WAAAAAaaaaaaa!! Yep, I'm whinin'. Summer is a'wastin' and I want to drive! Any ideas, guys? TJ, Just went through the same drill with my midget, at least regarding the brake lights not working. Check your brake light switch, which is just forward of the pedal box. If you have a faulty (read: leaking) MC or clutch MC, the fluid could have worked its way into the switch. A faulty switch will not operate the lights when the brake pedal is applied. Just another area to look at. Good luck, Pete "Pete Skalski" 32914... MORE

"We are in the process of relocating.... sporadic cell service" Ah...a "serious" matter, then. I'd go with Biff Jones idea for sure. A second distributor...all set up, spare spark plugs, spare fan belt, and a length of spare hose and ignition wire, spare fuel pump, and necessary small bag of tools. The all important flashlite of course and a portable starter/charger as well if you're really out there in the sticks. Of course... what will serve you best is a quality scheduled, preventive maintenance program (and the "right attitude" towards being "situationally aware" in terms of survival in the... MORE

I'm upgrading my early model .875" bore master cylinder to the later model with the .75" bore and I'm getting it brass sleeved by Joe at Sierra Specialty Auto too, but I have a problem. The plastic internal bits from the .75" MC came out in pieces=85 and I don't see replacements in the VB catalog. Is there an alternate source for these plastic bits, and are they specific to either the clutch or brake side=85 or are both bore assemblies the same? Any suggestions? I think they run directly on the diaphragm spring fingers, with the thrust pad (existing trilobular reaction plate) removed. If you have a larger competition clutch, you might have problems with the finger spacing, though. I have aquired a brand new 3 peice clutch kit with carbon bearing. I want to convert to a ball race thrust bearing, SO, does it run on the existing trilobular reaction plate fixed on the diaphragm spring? Or is there a special diaphragm spring with what I call 'curly fingers' for the bearing to run on ? Any info on the bearing? rgds Alan still working on it "Alan" 32788... MORE

Yep.... You got it big guy!!!! Of course, this assumes a reasonably healthy engine pulling decent vacuum. TWO CAVEATS.... 1) If the engine's clapped out and is pullin' lousy vacuum, the pistons will never "top out", spring tension and fully open butterflies notwithstanding and thus....it follows, that.... 2) the entire induction system has got to be "air tight" as well. You don't need a midget under the hood. You need an SU carb tool kit!!! It comes with a little jet centering tool along with "rods" you place within the piston tubes which temporarily take the place of the... MORE

Air in the line will only give you a soft or spongy petal, not a loss of brakes. Loss of brakes would be caused by a leak, either a wheel cylinder or a brake switch, which would have fluid all over, or a master cylinder, which can have fluid all over or it might leak back into the reservoir, which you wouldn't see any fluid. You say that you rebuilt the master, but don't mention the wheel cylinders. Brake fluid eats rubber parts. I would suggest rebuilding, or at least inspecting the wheel cylinders. Check for leaks, and check... MORE

1. The shortly later models used a 3/4" dual master cylinder with disk brakes. Looks just like the Bugeye 7/8" but takes less pressure. 2. There is a mastercylinder cap? on ebay for the dual mastercylinder that is raised an holds more fluid than the flat cover??? 3. I'm not sure that they will let you race with a later mastercylinder/clutch cylinder system? I don't know, I'm "simi- stock". Bob, Troutdale, OR Capt'n Bob, Quite. "Robert Webb" 32710... MORE

Hi, Just ran my Bugeye in 4 Vintage races but fortunately blew a head gasket, cutting short my last race, because the master cylinder had suddenly lost about half its fluid in a few laps! Guess now is the time to upgrade to a dual circuit cylinder. What is the easiest route to do this? Any "how to" guides on the internet? There is a roll cage tube that goes quite close beside the "box" the master brake/clutch cylinder unit is in, so I don't have a lot of room for anything. Is there a later spridget dual brake/clutch... MORE
