Engine is out and I'm waiting on the 5 speed kit. Noticed a bit of seepage around rear of crank. Not bad at all. Just a little. Thinking this might me a good time to install a rear seal. Some have told me that if the seepage is small, DON'T TOUCH IT! Others have said to ALWAYS install a rear seal. What do y'all think? What seal kit should I use if I install one? Just "semantics", JC Just picked up your post....one of the only caveats to this rule might be thoughtful consideration as to replacing clutch parts any time the engine is pulled. Got your posts confused there cap'n. I have a 5 speed already in place. I think Jim or Paul was wanting to know about the shift knob. I whacked off the datsun shifter and welded my MG shifter to it. I tacked it in place to try out the position, then changed it several times to make it feel right for seating position/arm length. It ended up being not too far off from the original MG position. David I think the silver on blue badges were for cars up to GAN5-118599, where there were one on each wing, the blue on silver ones were from GAN5-118599 onwards where only one was used on the passenger side wing, and these are the stick on ones. Not sure about why the BL logo wasn't used on cars exported to Arab countries, but apparently it was substituted for a 'unique' MG logo instead. My hunch tells me this was more to do with 'branding' and that the MG logo would be seen as having more 'prestige' in the Arab... MORE
Trevor J. I am using the original Spridget gearshift lever with aftermarket black leather- wrapped gearshit knob topped with a metal disc AH emblem. Picked it up many moons ago from Sports and Classics. Standard aftermarket part also comes in Walnut as well. Hi, Jim C. Comments..Rivergate clutch set-up... Running a Cooper S cammed 1293 with cam advanced 4 degrees for Metro inlet timing giving very torquey low and mid-range punch. No clutch problems in 6,000 miles. Ran Judson Supercharged (both 4 & 6 psi "wheels") stock 1275 for about 5,000 miles before realizing blower not compatible (as is) with engine size. Never had a problem with the Rivergate clutch during this time which included some pretty rouch acceleration runs in 3rd & 4th up steep grades. No clutch problems. I find the Rivergate clutch set-up to be more positive in "engagement"... MORE
Hello I have buy a Sprite mkII, I have troble with the clutch, there was a new clutch kit 10CC64-6, part no. GCK260, Borg & Beck part no. 50803, but it is not the rigt for the flywheel, there is another clutch i don't now the part number but it is smaller I have try it but it is not good, can I use the new clutch with another flywheel and is there anybody who know the part no. and where I can get it. Jim- Mine is being delivered with a black 5 speed knob, shift pattern in white. No idea if I'll like it. If I don't, I will simply rethread it to accept a leather "MG" logo shift knob. Jim- Do not take my comments as anything other than a personal opinion based on my research. I did talk with a couple people who have converted their Rivergate set-up to "all Datsun" components, but also contacted several who were delighted with the set-up, as is. EVERYONE with the Rivergate was pleased. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one. I actually like Rivergates crank seal the best, and may well have gone the Rivergate route if delivery was not an issue. Bob- I can't wait. Have the engine out already! Talked with Rivergate, and due to moving into their new shop, was advised they were just now filling November orders. It would be several months wait. Given that I am at the end of a ten year project, I want the car running the first day it gets above freezing in Ohio (which will probably be mid July). I had also heard that the Riverside clutch set-up could be an occasional problem. Apparently they use the MG pressure plate but a Toyota throw-out bearing. Not sure of the disc. Paul... MORE
I replaced my own windshield....successfully. Tried to get someone local to do it, and none of the glass places would touch the job. With a little planning, it really is an "at home" job. My brother and I did it while watching the Browns lose (again). First, order all new screws....you'll need them. Have some sharp drill bits and easy outs....you'll need them. After you get the old frame apart, spend some quality time polishing it....it'll need it. Put a new seal around the new glass and lightly soap the exterior edge of the seal. Have your helper pull... I've only put about 500 miles on my Rivergate conversion. I initally had questions about the custom clutch. I thought the trowout bearing was a datsun part? Anyway... I was concerned about being able to replace the clutch should rivergate not be in existence when the time came. However, I talked to my local transmission shop, and they said it would be no problem to fabricate. I plan on putting some serious miles on the Midget this summer. Ask me again at the end of the year how it is going. Otherwise I am happy with the clutch performance.... MORE

Nigel- Like you, I have tried very hard to maintain originality with my restoration. I went thru the same process you are with the sill color. I had my body shop spray the sills gloss, and from across the shop I can tell you it looked just plain goofy. We next went the other extreme and used a flat black, and it looked just plain awful. Nigel, I am very afraid to post any pix you could see. The car is in three colors of paint plus the original Brookland green. (Seeing what looked best, ya know). I have lowered the front with 1275 springs but not the rear just yet. I'm running American Racing Mags 5.5 inches with 165 x 70 tires. I've cut off the front bumper supports and sold off the rubber bumpers. The interior is new and pretty well sorted out. McGee runs and drives well except for my often mentioned clutch problem. Could anybody tell me where on the gearbox the reverse light switch should be, I can't find it on my box and was wondering if it was posibly a dash mounted manualy operated switch or if my gearbox had been replaced with an earlier one (still rib case)? Regards Rob Batley "robbatley" 29316... MORE
Cap'n It's coming on! I've been seriously hampered by the weather here lately, which hasn't been very conducive to spraying! We had snow here a week or so ago, since then its been milder but with that comes rain and wind; very windy here again today. But I've pushed on doing what I can, and the bodyshell with front panel assembly and both wings in position is now about 90% finished in gloss. Tim I am not that familiar with the 1500 cars but I expect the engine will have to come out to replace the clutch and so this is going to cost 300 in most garages, however if money is tight and the engine was running OK before the gasket blew why not just get that fixed (maybe 150 or so). The problem with second hand engines is that they may be no better than the one you have and you are not going to know without removing the head and checking the bores, so it will still cost you... Tim, I take it that you don't wish to do the work yourself? Repairs to a 1500 engine are really quite straightforward and its a really great way to learn about all aspects of the engine. An expert like Frank will take an engine and gearbox out in about an hour, I take a little longer, more like 1hour 15 minutes. If your engine was running OK before the head gasket blew then there is no need to take the engine out although obviously the clutch will. Further to my query regarding the water leak, I think it has been answered finally by the fact that on it's way to the garage this morning to be inspected, the head gasket blew. As usual this happened about 400 yards from the garage in question, leading me to wonder why as these things couldn't have waited for a few minuites longer until I was actually AT the garage and saved me a recovery fee.
