Dear Listers, All this fuel pump talk has got me indecisive. Had to have the car towed home after the mechanical pump crapped out with under 1500 miles on it. I now have the motor out for clutch replacement and vacillating between buying a new mechanical or getting a $40 Warburg electronic and fitting that. Besides the usual concerns I'm also installing twin SU's to replace the ace Stromberg. The larget twin fuel bowls are a concern or am I being iggerant? Advice and comments are kindly solicited Rob C 75 Midget being redone right..... I hope. Webfoot Leisure.com... MORE

Ben, (me again!) It may not be the clutch - it could be the U/Js on the prop shaft. They can make all sorts of odd noises when they are on the way out, including clicks and clangs. Probably most noticeable as you release, and re-apply load as you change gear. Try greasing them for starters and see if the noise changes or goes away. A whole lot easier than gearbox or clutch probles so try the easy things first. Guy "Guy Weller" 31816... MORE
Hi guys, I noticed the other day when driving that when i change gear usually from 2nd-3rd i hear a slight clanging sound from the clutch well i think its the clutch. Clutch release bearing maybe? or.... anyone else got any ideas? Cheers Ben Ben Lawlor 31815... MORE
Ben... I'd go with Guy's advice on greasing the U-joints first...most especially the front one which can be hard to service. But, when exactly in the process does the "clang" occur, Ben? When the clutch is to the floor and while in the process of shifting, or at the point in it's travel wherein the clutch is "transferring loads" to/from the rest of the powertrain? Cap'n. I was fortunate to have a pleasant weekend, with a variety of list members, as well as looking for some old car parts. Wednesday had me preparing the Impala, and display driver, for the trip to be sold. Thursday, I headed up to north Fort Worth, to meet up with Bruce Lowry, and his friend Shane. I met up with them a bit later than expected, as rain had slowed Bruce down to a crawl through Dallas. I parked the Impala next to their spaces, and installed my dummy driver, Gene Simmons. I had found a mask of him... MORE
I hope someone can give me some advice on this. Drivers school and race second weekend in June and I can't get the bloody running. I have a highly tuned (national level) race bugeye from the 70's era. Don't know the compression ratio, but probably pretty high, 12 to 1 at least. 4,000 to 7,000 rpm cam. 30 deg. advance. 110 octane race gas. champion n59g spark plugs. Electronic ignition box. No choke, just ram air intakes modifed hs2 carbs. Had it to a local brit car guru last fall and he tuned the carbs and set it up... MORE
On my way back from dropping my kids off at school this morning, I met a guy with a gorgeous 1969 TR6. Turns out his lower back problems are preventing him from fully enjoying the car so he wants to sell it. It's immaculate inside and out AND for those of you who'd ever dreamed of a Sunbeam Tiger or a TR8, it has a professionally installed 350 Chevy engine and auto trans AND a Corvette rear end. The car is a sleeper and looks complete stock until you open the bonnet or start the engine. Anyone interested in... MORE
Cap'n- All this talk about divorce is REALLY bummin' me. After ten LONG years of work, I am now driving the finest Midget I have ever been in. Car is as perfect as one can be (for a Midget) and drives like a dream. Just crosses the 1,000 mile mark! Now the bad news......divorce..... It appears highly unlikely I will be able to keep the car. I'm fighting it like crazy, but I know what I will have to do. I cannot describe how painful it is to lose this car..... Geez, now I'm bummin' worse. Paul '73 Midget... MORE
Talking of the BMHT at Gaydon, Who actually owns it? I know the shells are built by a separate company now, but what happened to the archive? After the rape and carve up of what was Austin Rover Gaydon, (the site) went to Ford as part of the deal for land rover. Did the archive go with it? If that is the case there is no chance I am giving ford any cash for a cert after what they have done to Jaguar (dressed up fords with jaguar stick on tat, not to mention fitting them with tractor engines)... As I inspected the transmission area on the sprite I noticed an extra hole on each side of the tunnel at about where the shift stick protrudes. Looks like the holes have pop rivet covers, about 6x6 inches, in place. Is this supposed to be or are they likely a PO's access places? cheers, bill b 1969 Sprite (Bilby) /\ /\ o o 0 William Burrell 31630... MORE
I finally got time to go a little further into my stuck in first sprite problem. I still would like to drive it around while I save up for the 5speed conversion. Which by the way seems to be better for the "fabricatingly challenged" than are the other options, although that big ole Toyota dual overhead cam job looks like fun. I removed the Gaiter retaining plate, Gaiter and draught excluder (sheesh, looked like the shifter housing and rubber do dad to me.) I think some parts are missing. Like the thrust button and spring. Looking down into the... MORE
Why stop there, lets go all the way. There were several conversions in the '80s (I think Renault???) where they set up an unlimited rally car where they hopped up the front engine, front wheel drive, then built an identical engine/tranny drive and put it in the rear. Just connected the throttles and the shift linkage and clutches together. They locked the steering in the rear and presto. a 500 or 600 HP rocket ship 4 wheel drive rally car. And if you blew an engine, you could still keep on driving!!!!! So all we have to do is... MORE
Hi, I am new, and I am a spridget-holic. Now that that is out of the way.... I am rebuilding the 1275 out of my 73 RWA and I want to upgrade the transmission to a 5 speed. I hear of a Toyota (2T) from perhaps the Celica(? - but what year?). I have been referred to a company in Australia, Dellow Automotive [ www.dellowauto.com.au ], that sells conversion kits for what they call the 2T or 3T transmission but it is too pricy to ship to me. See, I am in the US. Toyota gurus here don't know... MORE
hi, Im in the process of pulling the engine from the car (1500) so it can be rebuilt. While it and the box are out it seems like the ideal time to change the box. However, im presented with a dilema. the purpose of rebuilding the engine is so i can run the car in sprints and hillclimbs so the close ratio box is pretty attractive, however, the ford box is still a closer ratio set than the original and has the added attraction of the extra gear for better cruising. Having said that the Moss close ratio box... MORE
Neil, Remember that the taller top gear you can get in the tranny is good for cruising but also allows you to run a higher ratio rear end which will allow better acceleration in sprints and hill climbs and still have enough top speed for highway driving. I used to use the Morris pickup truck diff (5.38:1 if my feeble memory serves) for autocross with great success but I sure needed a taller top gear or overdrive. I suffered on the freeway at about 6,000 rpm at 55 Mph, but it really did scoot through the gears!!!!!!!!!. Cheers, Bob... MORE
Listers - I posted a message a few weeks back about attempting to get a proper title for my 75 Midget, without much luck... Yahooooiiiieeeee ! The title arrived in the mail a couple of days ago! After 4 calls to the local and state DMV offices, I finally talked to someone who new what was going on and gave me the direct line of the lady who handles such things, sent me the proper papers and local police officer inspected the VIN numbers signed the papers and bingo.... Guess it pays to talk to the proper people. Been... MORE
David There's a picture in my August folder in Nigels-71-Midget photo folder where you can just about see where I removed the floor around the trans tunnel - you can just see the weld round it and the new floor. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 31502... MORE
David Aha ! Well thats the other way round. My first piece of advice to you then is to do the inner and outer sills *before* you put in the new floor. Body rebuilds on monocoque cars need to be done around the door gaps - there's a possiblity you'll lock the car into a new shape by welding in the floor before you've done the inner and outer sills and then find the door won't fit properly, or you have problems getting the door to fit. Do the sills first - get the door gaps right - weld... MORE
when you say 'butting up under the piece left still........' I presume you don't mean butting up as in a butt joint but overlapping. If it overlaps under the transmission tunnel, doesn't the cross member continue there also? Conversely, if you DO mean a butt joint, isn't distortion still going to be a problem? Pedantic types need to know! Regards David "David Jacobs" 31455... MORE
David Thats a different situation, it doesn't matter if it butts up under the transmission tunnel - it will still lie flat under the crossmember - the problem was getting it to sit flat under the crossmember whilst butting it up under the piece left still attached to the sill. I made the panel behind my console out of 3/4" plywood and 1/8" hardboard, then cut a hole in the center of it to give me room for the wires coming ou t of the back of a cheap pioneer cd/stereo unit from WalMart. It looks fine and was not much work at all. I do not know how it would work for a std ribcase, but it works fine with the shifter location on my datsun 5speed. HTH BTW, I got this idea from a guy on the mgbbs web forums. "Trevor Jessie" 31425... MORE
Hi Pete, I've seen CD players mounted in the console on Spridgets. Even with the 5 speed conversion. It was just a case of heating, bending of the shifter stick. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 31423... MORE
