Hi Carl, And you are forgiven for saying, "I should have done this ages ago!" Just kidding! You're right, the typical transformation of the car cannot be appreciated until you do it to your own car. Glad the lightened flywheel is noticeable. I was pretty sure of that one, too. Thanks for the feedback. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 36497... MORE

Thanks Brad. Good to be back. Haven't been able to play with the blue goomba much until recently. I'm now having to rebuild the master cylinder because I just HAD to go and buy the 65 which has the dual master cylinder. Over $400 to replace. Yikes. "Ginger" 36475... MORE

I'm charging the battery on my 65. It's been sitting for a while with a malfunctioning clutch master cylinder. Is there anything I should run through the fuel line to clean the carbs? "Ginger" 36457... MORE

I own a 1971 mg midget. I am having diffuculty getting the clutch to work and I suspect that it is due to the fact that I joined two 1/4" double flare lines together with a union, a male to male adapter, a junction whatever you want to call it and this joint leaks. it was not a splice by any means. I did not cut the lines at any time. Clutch fluid can be seen and felt around the joint once the pedal is depressed no matter how well it is wiped off before hand. There is no... MORE

Well I just went and looked at mine and it appears to have the same, double or single flare connections or the slave cylinder and the clutch master. I assumed it was bubble the same as the brakes. I guess you learn something new every day :) Duncan Duncan Sinclair Tel: 713-582-3422 duncan@... "Duncan Sinclair" 36428... MORE

Glad to hear you have her running again!. 2 thoughts on the clutch...from a fellow 1500 owner: 1) is the clutch plate installed the correct way (there is a stamping that says "this side to engine" or something. It will fit facing either way, but will only truly work when facing the correct way. A local shop did this one to me a while back. 2) On my Midget, there was no obvious sign of an air pocket (clutch hose is semi-transparent), but both slave & master were replaced. It worked, but not quite right, as you describe. I... MORE

Spent yesterday squeek and rattle testing in the feild, My 1500 Midegt has now put another 2 miles on its odometer (first movement it has seen in 16 years).. Found a loose shock boly, a loose wheel bearing and that I had only started the fuel pipe union into the tank and not done it up.. once it was all done it drove reaonably well.. apart form one thing, the clutch is still not working properly.. If you hold it down in 1st, the car gradually creeps off, my suspision is it fluid is leaking past the seals back... MORE

One foreign parts store told me Castrol Dot 3. Another foreign parts store said Castrol GTX(exceeds Dot 3). They said the GTX was a low moisture absorbtion (lma) fluid since the brake and clutch used natural rubber, not synthetic rubber like american cars. Question-will any dot 3 or dot 4 fluid do fine? Between the the castrol dot 3 or castrol gtx, which is preferred? Thanks! "jcjr7" 36329... MORE

Adam Do you mean the threads on the master cylinder or the threads on the brass connector. The threads on the connector actually looked like they weren't in great condition, but it never leaked there before, so I just screwed them back in. Do you know if the teflon tape will disintegrate over time from contact with the brake fluid?\ Bob rlirwn@... 36323... MORE

I got my resleeved master and clutch slave cylinders for my bugeye back from Whitepost and installed them. When I started to bleed the brakes more fluid came out around the brake line attachment point than came out of the bleeder at the rear brake. I didn't replace all the brake lines and would really prefer not to do that. When I installed the lines I just screwed them into the master cylinder (after cleaning them first with clean brake fluid and drying them). Is there something else that I should have done? Any ideas on what is causing... MORE

Sorry - my car is a 60 bugeye with 1098 engine and ribcase gearbox. Bob rlirwn@... 36303... MORE

I pulled off the old slave cylinder and had it resleeved. When I took it off, it was very difficult to remove the upper bolt due to the small amount of room (no room for socket - only turn about one flat at a time) and the fact that the bolt was so long that there was less than 1/8 inch of room between the bolt and the frame when it was all the way unscrewed. I went out and bought a ratcheted box wrench, but I was wondering if anyone had any other tips. Maybe I could use... MORE

Hi Cap'n. Just make your own. Get some of the round ceramic magnets that mosy hardware stores have for sale and with a dab of JB Weld on the plug, you've now got a wonderful magnetic plug! The dif plug has a flat surface, so only needs a drop or so on it and place the magnet on it. Let it harden a few hours and use it. The Brit trans plug has a deep recess, so takes just a little bit more JB, Then put the magnet in the recess, let it set and now you have a... MORE

Can I use the Rivergate clutch cylinder with my standard ribcase transmission? If it reduces the pressure required, that would be good. rlirwn@... 36152... MORE

Well.... the brass sleeved cylinders seem to last a lot longer, most especially in cars that "sit" and are little used. :) Cap'n Bob '60 Frog PS...speaking of slave cylinders...as in clutch slave cylinders. Rivergate is producing their new 7/8" clutch slave cylinder. For those of you running a 5 speed with the 7/8" Bugeye Master, this will result in about a 30% reduction or so in clutch pedal eff ort. :):) "Robert E. Shlafer" 36144... MORE

Need a new clutch slave cylinder for my 60 bugeye. I'm having the master cylinder resleeved, but a new slave cylinder is about 1/3 the cost of resleeving. I only drive about 2000 - 3000 miles per year. Is the resleeved cylinder that much better? rlirwn@... 36142... MORE

Well the SoCal weathermen were wrong again! It was suppose start raining again yesterday and today - but all the rain stayed north in Los Angeles County. Orange County is sunny, mid-70s. So I decided to drive the bugeye up to a client meeting today . I had just replaced the RC40 muffler (riped off on freeway) with a cheaper Thrush Cherry bomb from NAPA. I liked the sound of the RC40 (throaty but smooth) - but I like the Cherry bomb much better (slightly louder, definitely raspier). Kinda the difference between white wine and Irish Whisky. Bugeye ran... MORE

79 Midget, quick question: Does anyone know the type of fitting that goes into the back of the master and slave cylinder? Back story: Car was running great, shifting just fine, 68k on the odo, One day clutch goes almost to the floor, next day it goes right to the floor, no pressure at all. topped off Master cylinder, press pedal, fluid goes all over bellhousing and tranny. Bummer. Moss wants $50 for a replacement hose, but I work at a place with a large selection of hoses, fittings, etc. Are the fittings Flared, or some mutant British type?... MORE

145sr13 tires were origonal, however this measuring system is no longer used. the orgonal aspect ratio was approximatly 82%. This means that the side walls were 82% as tall as the treads were wide. 145/80/13 tires are a good approximation, and will lower the ride hight a little and have the origonal tread width but can be hard to come by in america (not a problem in england longstone tyres is a good source). It is possible to fit 155 or even 165 series tires but you must keep in mind that the aspect ratio (the middle number) is... MORE

I'm so proud of myself...I'm sitting here patting myself on the head because I can't reach my back. After nearly a year of my poor little car sitting on jack stands with the front end in the air, I finished the assembly of the front end with poly bushings, new lever shocks and springs. I had to replace one "A" arm due to wear from the folcrum pin...if you don't do any other maintenance on your car, make sure you lube the front end regularly!!! I also installed a lowering kit with the new coil springs - it was... MORE

G'day Jim "Who the heck designed the timing cover without a timing pointer!?" You can blame Alex Issigonis, who designed the Mini. In a Mini, you do the timing off the flywheel, through a hole in the clutch cover. That means you don't need a pointer on the timing cover. Since the engines are basically identical, and the timing covers are certainly interchangeable, many Sprites and Midgets end up with Mini timing covers. And no pointer! avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 35998... MORE

No, Russ, yopu do not have to get into the trans to deal with the clutch slave cylinder - it's mounted on the outside of the bellhousing just behind the engine. Unless you are really, really skinny, you will need to jack the left side up to gain access. If you have a 1500 (and if you do, I feel sorry for you ;)) the slave is secured by a pinch bolt - otherwise, it's held by two bolts. "Jim" 35991... MORE
