G'day Jim
"Who the heck designed the timing cover without a timing pointer!?"
You can blame Alex Issigonis, who designed the Mini.
In a Mini, you do the timing off the flywheel, through a hole in the clutch cover. That means you don't need a pointer on the timing cover. Since the engines are basically identical, and the timing covers are certainly interchangeable, many Sprites and Midgets end up with Mini timing covers. And no pointer!
