David, I think you stated it backwards.
Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover.
Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then.
