G'day guys
Here's a little story that deserves to be told.
Way back last August, I bought a used Datsun 5-speed box in the US, and had it shipped to Paul Asgeirsson at Morriservice to be rebuilt. A mate of mine was coming home from the US, and between the two of us we arranged Paul to supply two 5-speed conversion kits, my gearbox and another one for my mate.
Well eventually they arrived, and in March my 5-speed Datto box and a kit went to another mate (Steve) 600 miles away, down in Melbourne. Steve fitted it to his Bugeye and was very happy with it, until it started sticking in gear and making strange noises. He drained the box, and found metal swarf in the oil.
Steve contacted Paul, and under Paul's direction by email, Steve dismantled the box. It seems a circlip on the main shaft had failed (no fault of Paul's), allowing excessive free-play of the gears, damage to a synchro hub, damage to the mainshaft etc.
I don't think Paul's reaction to this problem was very typical. He rebuilt another 5-speed box and freighted it, totally at his expense, from Portland Oregon to Steve in Melbourne Australia.
To quote Steve:
I have nothing but respect for the way Paul handled this problem, he's been a great bloke to deal with and was very keen to see the issue rectified. He made numerous offers of assistance even though it would have been very easy for him to do nothing and leave me with a busted box or even sell me the parts I required, seeing that I'm half a world away and unlikely to cause much fuss.
I think that deserves recognition.
Thank you Paul, from both Steve and me.
avagoodday
Colin
