Measure the battery voltage, with an alternator it should be 14.7 volts
(about) at fast tickover with no lights, heater etc on. You can buy a
digital multimeter for 5 in our loacl market or maplins. Invaluable.
Sounds like a dead alternator to me. Incidently the light only shows that
there is a vlotage on the field winding of the alternator (self generating)
not that it is actually charging. I have had one and only one instance
where the field voltage was being generated but the alternator was not
charging. The multimeter sorted it out.
