In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a
frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the
backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening
for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing
the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in
place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned
clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable
to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a proper socket or is there
another way to get a solid grip on the nut??? I tried a very large
slip joint pliers but the wheel studs do not allow full contact on
the flat. It looks to me like the bearing assembly has to come off
to be able to remove the backing plate.
The fuel line that gave me fits last week finally came free from the
tank so this is my latest challenge. The cause of that problem was
paint that had gotten onto the threads and that was why my
penetrating oil was not effective. No paint inside this area.
Someday I hope to be able to offer help instead of just having to ask
for it.
