Brad,
I do the same thing with possums. They are so butt ugly..like ugly large
rats. I usually trap them and re locate. Actually, it is a real challenge
because I use the same technique they used in cartoons when I was a little
kid. I take a cardboard box, put a rock on the top for weight, take a
pencil and prop it up, put some cat food in the back and tie some black
thread to the pencil bottom and stretch it across the rear of the box so he
trips it at the food. Works quite well.
The other night there was one eating my cat food, and I took my air rifle
and only gave three pumps. At 20 pumps it goes like hell, but at 3 pumps
you can almost see the bb go through the air. Well, I popped him in the ass
and I was shocked when I killed him. I felt so bad, I just wanted to scare
him away. He was laying there dead as a door nail and I walked over and
poked him with the barrel of the gun. He curled his lips back and snarled,
then got up and sauntered away and I realized I had been had, of course he
was "Playing Possum", thats what they do.
I felt bad all over again in the morning when I walked out on the patio and
saw a little spot of blood and some drops leading away where he went.
Such is life in the country.
Cheers,
Bob in San Diego
