The early cars would have had an L instead of a U for North American cars;
the U only came in from 1967. The second letter (the one after your U) is a
model year code letter, starting in 1970 with A. Then the serial number
(which started at 101 so yours would have been the 91078th car, except
there were various breaks in the numbering, so it wouldn't!) Then the last
letter, which once again, only appeared in 1967, G, or more rarely M,
indicates the manufacturing site - G being the MG plant at Abingdon and M
being Morris' Cowley factory.
If you had an Australian assembled Sprite, it would have had the actual
colour name stamped on a separate plate.
